In 1915, Governor John Widenius issued an executive order creating Tamarac Island as a state park which included land east of US-1 that had been used for cotton plantations since before Tampa's founding. That same year also saw significant development when construction began on what would eventually become Broadway Street which connected downtown with Ybor City on the west side and southside of Hillsborough County with new shopping districts burgeoning on each side including Northeast Third Avenue on South Side streets near Democrat Road on East Side streets; Midtown Plaza off Congress Avenue on North Side streets; University Place off Dunedin Boulevard just north of I-275/US-1; and Good Samaritan Village near Clearwater Beach just south of US-1 along State Road 427/SR 427 (now called Causeway Drive). Today street namesakes continue to proliferate throughout Downtown Tampa such as Church Street (formerly Hwy 20), Harvard Street (formerly Hwy 1A), Division Street (formerly US- 27B), Denny Highway (former SR 519), State Road 436/SR 436A (now CR 490) and many more! Tampa's proximity to Lake Stuart - home to some of Florida's most popular tourist destinations - made it an ideal location for shipbuilding during World War IIs because Dupont Naval Shipyards could produce large numbers of ships quickly at reduced cost without having to leave Florida’s largest freshwater body accessible only by boat or airlift! Notable vessels constructed here include USSrepairman(LHD 9) – hull number 54 – built in 1945; USS Tuscaloosa(LCS 3) – hull number 272 – launched late 1942; USS Forrestal(CVN 73) – hull number 219BB – launched February 1944; USS Enterprise(CVN 65) – hull number 281BBQC – Launched October 1945 On November 17th 1941 whileLieutenant Commander Charles Cushman Jr., UDT 2nd Class commanding Officer aboard USS Constitution anchored off shore deserters were landing at Fort Pierce beach after sailing out from Key West Harbor intending instead to reach Spanish Beach about twenty miles southwest but discovered enemy forces ashore waiting for them! After radio contact failed Cushman ordered all engines stopped and waited until morning light before proceeding any further towards shore then launching boats into night retrieval attempts without success returning until 2300 hours when he finally sighted friendly markers offshore aborting search effort lieutenant commander cushman awarded Navy Cross for heroism above and beyond those requirements
