Temple Terrace, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,027 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from the religious Temple of the Holy Cross which was located on the original town site. The first settler in what is now Temple Terrace was George Hardin who arrived in 1836. He and his wife named their new home "Homespun". In 1847, John Pritchard settled nearby and built a ferry across the St Johns River to get to Islamorada. This allowed him to sell goods he produced in his land to those living on Tampa Bay. In 1851, James Matson bought some land northeast of downtown and moved his family there including his daughter Julia who would later become Mrs. William Troup (1864-1948). They started a grocery store on Main Street which would grow into one of Temple Terrace's most famous businesses. In 1902, Lillie Burchardt purchased some property east of downtown and began growing fruits and vegetables there which became known as "Burchardt's Garden." She also built a house there which still stands today. In 1915, two men by the name of Lowy bought some land northwest of town and started developing it into an agricultural center with stores, homes, barns, wells etc.. When they died suddenly young their wives took over running that part of the business until 1942 when it passed down through several families until it finally Cameo Farms bought it in 1978 by Dick DeVos (founder/CEO) for $2 million dollars renamed DeVos Place after him along with other properties currently under development at this location including an arena/park/mall with shopping mall adjacent thereto . The history of Temple Terrace can be traced back two hundred years when Methodists met here for worship purposes at Crossroads Methodist Church from Jacksonville., Florida between 1814-1827 under Revs Elijah Howe & John Whitefield . Reverend Lowy donated land for this purpose near what is now intersection Of State Road 805 And US Highway 1A southcentral village called Northwood . After numerous meetings Spirit Lake Reservation was formed within this area soon afterward around Spring Creek joins Little Cedar River thenceforth known as White Settlement Where Methodists had Meeting House & Graveyard sites prior then moving further westward thence Big Cedar River where Meeting House Site now situated southeast corner CR 503 And Old Hwy 1 Escambia Rd Palatka FL 32068 Under Revs David Levy & Isaac Allred during whose time nearly 400 People resided There before Removal Adjacent To Spring Creek For Agricultural Purposes On April 12th 1799 pursuant Withdrawn From Service By order Of Board Of Commissioners At A Special Session Held At East Pensacola 5th day Adventist November 25th 1800 Chattahoochee Co Public School District No 15
