They named their new settlement after John Wesley's birthplace, which was then a part of Middlesex County, England. In 1841, General Andrew Jackson visited Wildwood and made it his headquarters when he fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. He later donated land to the town to build roads and military installations. In 1886, Standard Oil Company built a refinery on Long Island Sound near Fort Myers while construction was ongoing on its plant in Tampa Bay. A group of local businessmen decided to buy the refinery and rename it Wildwood Refining Company until it became an independent company in 1912 under that name. When Standard merged with Texaco in 1984, Wildwood Refining became part of that company as well. Finally, when ChevronTexaco merged with Texaco Inc., Wildwoods Refining joined that company as well (though still independently managed). Wildwood currently has a population of over 1,000 people who live within its borders or visit during visiting times (eveyone can enjoy all that wildWOOD has to offer without leaving!). The economy is based largely on agriculture – hay production being one major source – but also includes support services for businesses such as retail/commercial uses along with tourism related activities such as golfing and fishing trips available year-round! Many homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged byAndrew's winds and rains. By 1914, only a few buildings remained standing in what had been one of Florida's most vibrant communities. In recent years, some efforts have been made to revive interest in Wildwood including tours of the ruins conducted by historians and volunteers associated with Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO). In addition to providing access to historical artifacts from surrounding communities which are preserved onsite at Historic Park headquarters building; SOHO also promotes educational events that focus on topics related to local history including restoration projects that have taken place at various properties within reach of downtown Wildwood since 2014 - helping restore much-needed character back into this historic town while also keeping it open for tourism purposes!
Wildwood was founded in 1821 by Captain John J. Cook as a trading post on the east coast of Florida. The first permanent settler in Wildwood was James Howells, who arrived in 1827. In 1830, Wildwood became a part of the state of Florida and eventually attained its current name. Wildwood has experienced numerous changes throughout its history, including being annexed by Jacksonville in 1901 and then becoming a part of Tallahassee in 1912. It would go through more changes during World War II when it was occupied by the United States Military for five months during the Battle of Wildwood.
