Winter Springs, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 5,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville- Away from Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John Haught and his wife Anna Belle Haught. It grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the St Johns River and its connections to railroads. The first post office was established in 1893 and became known as Winter Springs. In 1918, Springdale bought out Winter Springs' share in the railroad company and incorporated as a separate municipality. Founded on December 12th, 1902 by Drs James Cashman & Minnie Cashman Sellers it was located at what is now US 192 east of I-75 near mile marker 3755 North giving us our namesake “Springdale” after we bought out (or leased) their entire interest including that pesky mile marker! We also enjoyed being able to call ourselves just “Winter Springs” back then! That moniker stuck until 1957 when our current name change happened……….to “Gainesville” due to increasing competition from other towns within Polk County having similar names such as usurping our claim to be called Winter Springs by virtue of having more people living there during winter months! LOL….. Although we still enjoy being referred to as simply Winter Springs even though most everyone else knows about Gainesville now 🙂 Today, with over 6,000 residents situated around downtown core where shopping and dining options are available along with various parks & Recreational activities opportunities throughout the year for locals & visitors alike,Winter Springs continues to thrive thanks mostly to its wonderful citizens who have contributed greatly through their hard work – whether it be volunteering or donating time or money towards numerous local purposes/projects etc….. Winter Springs, Florida was founded by General Henry Flagler on November 8, 1911. The town was originally named Key West after the Spanish fort in the area. The name was changed to Winter Springs due to the cold weather conditions during winter. Winter Springs has since become a major tourist destination for the state of Florida and is known for its beautiful architecture, shopping opportunities, and natural beauty. The first settlers in Winter Springs were white men from Georgia who immigrated to Florida in 1845. After arriving in Florida, they built a log cabin near what is now downtown Winter Springs. They named their settlement after one of their friends, General George Washington Jacksonville (1784-1848). In 1851, another group of Georgians arrived at Winter Springs and decided to rename their community after Flagler himself as he had been instrumental in helping establish key points along Florida's Gulf Coast including Pensacola and St Augustine. This second group of settlers called themselves the Jacksonville Group and continued growing the community until 1859 when they all left for good because of constant Seminole Indian raiding. In 1861, Colonel John Chilton bought 1/2 acre of land east of downtown from James Burchfield for $1 per acre which he used as his plantation house until his death in 1865. From 1865-1887 Colonel Chilton ran a small ferry service between Key West and WinterSprings across Tampa Bay that transported passengers and goods between Tampa Bay and Pensacola. In 1916 Captain Henson leased property adjacent to present day First Avenue North from Mr Claude Vetterman which served as anvils forging forge making tools required by various businesses throughout Tampa Bay area such as Jardin Rubber Company Packing Co., American Can Manufacturing Company & Compound etc..Captain Henson operated this business until 1922 when it went out of business due to Prohibition restrictions on alcohol production across much of America。 When World War II began there were over 2 dozen companies located throughout southernFlorida munitions plants turning out tens thousand cases each month! Many Floridians volunteered into military service but many more found themselves working behind enemy lines supplying Japan with food supplies through airfields under Japanese control including those atolled Atalanta Island just east of SpringSprings where thousands died from malnutrition within weeks following Pearl Harbor! Some local residents also participated directly or indirectly in this war effort such as Mrs Florence Ballard who worked at her husbands grocery store DuPont Circle while he served overseas with Du Pont’s Naval Petroleum Service; Mrs Rosemary Deering who managed her parents home cooked meals during WWII; Dr Franklin Parker who served as a medic with USMC detachment attached to Army Air Corps Base Camp Shanks]; Dr Ethel Heckscher who helped operate DuPont chemical plant’s laboratories; Harry Barnes whose family raised chickens on their farm northbound lane off US 17 just outside the city limits before returning them early one morning so Barnes could open his small grocery store shortly thereafter.; many other citizens like Margaret Hyatt work today without recallable historical footnote
Winter Springs was founded in 1884 by the Winter family. It was originally called "Newburgh" after Newburgh, New York, because of the similarity of its location. The original home of the Winter family still stands on Walton Street, and is now a museum.
