In 1838, the U.S. government took over most of Tampa Bay and incorporated it as Gainesville County,Florida; however, Gainesville County never included much of what is now Zephyrhills because it was considered part of Tampa Bay’s downtown area (the original town boundaries). Zephyrhills began to grow rapidly after World War II when many soldiers returned home and started families in the growing town. Today, Zephyrhills has an estimated population of 5,968 people and comprises parts of both Gainesville and Volusia Counties – making it one of the fastest-growing communities in Florida! The name "Zephyrhills" was derived from a Native American word meaning "a rise from the water." Consequently, it was likely named for an area nearby that would provide cover from possible attack by pirates or Seminole Indians. Zephyrhills developed as a retail and agricultural center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first post office opened in 1892. By 1915, Zephyrhills had become a full city with its own government and police department. In 1925, Zephyrhills became one of three towns along US 1 (now US 92) to form the new county of Polk. At that time, Polk County consisted of only six towns: Muskegon Heights (near Detroit), Clearwater Beach (in Brevard County), Lakeland/Winter Haven (in Hillsborough County), Miami Gardens (in Lee County), Jacksonville Beach (in Pasco County), and Zephyrhills proper. By 1930, while still part of Polk County, Zephyrhills had reached its peak population with 11,000 people living in 906 homes! The following year saw another growth spurt as 30000 more people moved into the town between 1931 and 1933 thanks to World War II efforts to increase military production within key U.S.-based industries such as aircraft manufacturing and rubber product production! In 1948, after years of decline due to various factors including popular subdivisions being built in other parts of Florida and economic recession throughout much of the United States – includingFlorida –Zephyrhills experienced its most significant growth yet when it annexed portions of neighboring Manatee Township! This annexation provided new businesses opportunities within an already burgeoning community which now boasted over 100 stores and restaurants!. In recent years however there have been several setbacks for both citizens & businesses alike; most recently being Hurricane Irma which caused significant damage & loss throughout much if not all aspects of this vibrant community! Despite these challenges though – especially given current market conditions – ZaphYRHILLS continues to be one America's fastest growing communities!"
Zephyrhills, Florida was founded in 1867 by John H. Zephyr and his brother James. The first post office was established in this town in 1868. In 1870, the town constructed a school, which became the first public school in the area. In 1886, a flour mill was built in Zephyrhills and remained in operation until 1959. In 1899, a depot was built to serve the town and served as its local transportation hub for periodical goods arriving from Jacksonville, Florida and other points east. In 1932, Zephyrhills incorporation as an independent municipality was ratified by the Florida Legislature; it is one of only two townships within Hillsborough County that have not been incorporated since 1978 (the other being Port Charlotte). The town remains politically subdivided into wards headed by village supervisors who are also responsible for maintaining public roads and parks within their jurisdiction; however, all zoning decisions made by these officials are subjected to review by the county commission as part of its overall planning process for Hillsborough County. The population of Zephyrhills peaked at over 20,000 during World War II due to wartime manufacturing activities conducted throughout the region. However, following the war's end many residents relocated to larger cities or suburbs across Tampa Bay due to economic hardship caused by inflation and advancements in technology; nevertheless, some small businesses remain active within the community today despite facing challenges such as declining petroleum prices and budget cuts resultant from recent fiscal austerity measures advocated by Mayor Bob Buckhorn.
