Acworth, Georgia is a small town in the Unincorporated community of Acworth, Georgia. The population was 705 at the 2000 census. It is located in Chatham County. The Acworth School District serves Acworth residents. Acworth was founded by William Hargrave and his wife, Nancy (née McCoy). They were two farmers who came to the area from Virginia in 1837. A post office was established in 1853, and a store been built on the present site of the Acworth Elementary School in 1909. The Ladd family bought land in 1911 and built a home there which still stands today. Arthur Ladd Jr., son of Arthur Ladd Sr., started manufacturing agricultural tools here after leaving college to found his own company. In 1954, he donated land for what is now called Ladd-Hargrave High School which opened its doors that fall semester as one of three high schools within the newly created Chatham County Schools system. In 1967, Acworth had its first commercial development when an auto dealership opened up on State Route 316 just north of town center with four specialty stores including Sears & Roebuck, JiffyLube, Kmart and Overholt Chevrolet/GMC Vanagon parts outlets. That same year saw the opening of Walter Reed Medical Center adjacent to then-acrossed Old US Highway 92; it would become one of the largest healthcare complexes west of Atlanta when itopened its doors in 1978 with 2 million patient visits each year! Acworth is the most populous city in Fulton County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Georgia. It is an agricultural community that has been inhabited by people for over three hundred years. The first settlers to Acworth were white women who came from Mobile, Alabama in 1828 on the steamboat "Cordova". They named their community after Acworth, England where they had been living before coming to America. In 1836, John Bostwick purchased 1/2 acre (0.24 km2) of land northeast of downtown Acworth from James Fenton and built a frame house which he called "Bostwick's Fort". This fort served as a town center until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1871, members of the Baptist church organized what became known as "The First Baptist Church" which met on North Main Street. Reverend Aiken preached there for many years before moving to his current location on West Elm Street in 1895. In 1898–99, Rev. Lawrence Wainwright organized a Sunday school within the First Baptist Church which became known as "The Acworth School". Reverend Wainwright served as its first principal until his death in 1966; however, TheAcword School continued to operate until 1973 when it moved into its present building on Elm Street near Interstate 20 and University Avenue (now part of SW Georgia Tech). In 1906 defendant Jethro Gibbs leased 4 acres (1 ha) east of downtown Acworth from Mrs. Elizabeth Welsh for $1 per year with intent to develop it into a home place for women who worked outside the home while their husbands attended college or military service abroad during World War I or World War II; but no such homes were ever built as result of this agreement because Mrs Welsh died prior to its expiration date without any children being born within that time period due to social customs then prevailing at that time about fatherless families living together with mothers working outside their homes etcetera etcetera etcetera). In 1915 Geo Meeks bought 2/3 interest from Mrs Elizabeth Welsh in defendants' failed attempt to build a home place adjacent thereto known then only as the 'Gibbs Estate'. At approximately this same time Geo Meeks also leased 3/4 acre (1 km2) east of downtown Acworth from Willis Hinesfeldt & Sons Incorporated for $5 per month with intent to subdivide it into parcels thereof upon sale thereof subject thereto forever unto various persons unnamed therein). In 1917 Sam Webb leased 9/10acre(2 ha)[4] southwest corner lot #202 between Elm St./SR 20 & SR 301 [later part of SW Georgia Tech], Lot #203 & Lot #204 adjoiningowned by Chilton Bros., Incorporated thenceforth known collectively hereinas 'Webb Estate'. From these transactions proceeds went back intotowne coffers through taxation and other sources providing necessary support not only for ownership but also development now contemplated thereby including erection ol tho following: •A hospital—the present day New Hope Hospital.—(and associated buildings)—including an Operating Room—an X-Ray Lab—an Anesthesia Unit—an Emergency Ward,—piled high around thc property now containing 514 beds (& subsequently expands), 10 hearing labs,—19 kitchens,—6 dining rooms,—5 master bedrooms plus two guest bedrooms upstairs each——thousands cf sq ft [today]. As early as 1828 white ladies settled down along Mobile River Road just north of modern dayAcworth limits
In 1802, Acworth was founded by two brothers, John and James Acworth. The town was named after the acorn that John Acworth found in a field. The Muscovy Road, which runs through Acworth, is also known as the "John Acworth Highway." In 1906, the town had a population of just over 100 people. By 1957, it had grown to over 1,600 people. In 2007-2008, Acworth experienced an influx of immigrants from Mexico due to the region's growing economy. As a result of this influx, many businesses in the town closed or merged with other local businesses.
