The Acworth community began as a small farming village in 1853. In 1888, the Acworth Manufacturing Company was founded by George Waddell with the goal of making high-quality saddles for horse owners all over America. The company grew rapidly and by 1912 it employed 1,500 people. In 2002, Acworth became an incorporated city under the name of Atlanta; however, many businesses continue to operate as independent entities within the city limits. The history of Acworth goes back to 1853 when two men from Oglethorpe County named Jameson and Norvell settled on what is now east side of town (now part of Old College Road). They built a log cabin which served as their home until 1857 when they moved out to more spacious land that they donated to the Methodist Church trustees for use as a school farm. When this property was sold off in 1865, much of what we now call northeast Acworth was still living within those bounds – including present day DeKalb Avenue between Northside Drive and Candace Road. The first students were enrolled in December Term School 1870; after that there were no static buildings or enrollment records until 1895 when deeds were filed for new lots on what is now northwest corner of Northwest Parkway and Northeast Parkway among other places (the map shows lot #2 being about where current Candace Road meets NW Parkway). It wasn’t long before wagon trains stopped at our little school farm during their way Westward through Alabama & Georgia en route to Oklahoma City or points beyond! On one such occasion Mr Norvell’s son Wesley went inside “to get his dinner” only to find his dad eating fried chicken while he listened with interest (& approval) outside! Wesley may have been 2 years old at this time (!), but he had already learned how important it was for fathers & sons BBQing together over dinner not just once but often!! About 1905/06 some German immigrant family moving into Acadian Street area near present day lunchroom started having problems getting water from well so got Pastor Ritchie from church down here names Raynor et al permission to use well [ Sept 1907 ]. Well soon enough water issues were corrected allowing access also for genever manufacture! This neighborhood today includes parts of NW Parkland Drive . . . After World War I things changed again with several families moving into NE corner lot next door after dark because police said there would be no trouble if everyone stayed put (& neighbors did too!) With Prohibition coming along things got pretty dicey folks especially since bootlegging became big business then! And yes post WWI growth really picked up thanks largely to two brothers who owned grocery store west side across street from elementary school called Carlson Bros Publix which closed around 1970-71 due mainly to poor economy/market conditions then reopening briefly in late 1980s under different ownership before closing again around 1990-1991″ In 1928 Avila Brothers opened their own grocery store on what later becameCandace Road opposite Northwest Parkway Elementary School[then] known as White Sands Grocery]. That location has continued unchanged throughout downtown redevelopment efforts culminating with its closure in early 2016 adjacent Pioneer Place development project» In 1932 acorn hardware store opened on NW cornerNW Pkwy&N ePkwy [ Map ] becoming one of few remaining stores open during Depression era.] acorn Hardware remained open until 2003 when it merged with Sam's Club» Sam's Club closed down shop plaza located at NW cornerNW Pkwy&N ePkwy [ Map ]in Sep 2003 leaving only remnant inventory behind
