Acworth, Georgia is a small town in northwestern Georgia. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Acworth is named after General Andrew Jackson's home county, Clarke County, Alabama. The first Europeans to visit Acworth were the crew of the USS Constitution on July 4, 1784. They charted and named a bay in what is now Acworth after General Jackson's birthplace in Tennessee. He had been born there on May 30, 1745. In 1802, President James K. Polk sent John Quincy Adams as ambassador to Russia because he believed that Russia was supporting Jefferson's administration during the American Revolution by supplying arms and munitions to France and Spain. Adams found that Russian officials were bribing local landowners to keep them from leasing land to Americans or selling it to other settlers. The president ordered Ulysses S Grant to investigate Adams' allegations and find out whether they were true or not. Grant found no evidence that Russia was behind any wrongdoing but did order an inquiry into whether anyone in America had connections with Russian spies within our government! In 1881, Jno Pugh bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of downtown Acworth for $1 million from Daniel Webster for use as a citrus plantation; it became known as "Pugh Place." In 1886 Pugh donated 1 acre (0·3 hectare) each side of his property line west of Academy Road (now Old Park Road) northward intoAcworth Township so that people might live there free from taxation and subdivision by others until annexation into city limits in 1907/8 when all township lands became city-owned property subject only to tax assessment! Today most aspects of this long-held dream still remain true about living 'in your own back yard'. For many years before World War II Acworth functioned primarily as a farming community with cotton gin production accounting for more than 60% of its GDP between 1910-1915; however during the war period it changed rapidly becoming oneofthe principal manufacturing centers due largely to new wartime development such as aircraft productionbeginningin1918and munitions productionstartingin1932." The town was named after Mountaintop Hill, which is located in nearby Athens, Alabama. Achilles Plantation was founded in 1792 by General James Oglethorpe. The plantation became famous for its production of cottonseed oil. Another early owner of Achilles Plantation was Colonel Post. In 1819, an act was passed Congress that declared all slaves within the United States free. This event marked a turning point for Acworth and other slave-owning communities across America. After the emancipation of slaves, many freedmen moved into Acworth to start new lives. Many businesses were established in Acworth during this time including a bakery, gristmill, and lumberyard. The population of Acworth peaked at around 10,000 during the mid 1800s but it slowly began to decline over the next few decades due to various factors such as economic disaster and increased competition from surrounding towns. In 1870, Acworth had only 2 living residents out of a total population of 12 households. By 1930, the population had decreased to 6 individuals out of a total population of 30 households
In 1892, Acworth was founded as a small town in the Cobb County region of Georgia. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location and its ample rainfall. In 1912, the Acworth cotton gin was built and became one of the leading cotton mills in the area. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1978. Today, Acworth is a census-designated place (CDP) located within Cobb County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,514. Its largest employer is Pinnacle Foods Inc., which has facilities in Acworth and Decatur.
