In 1915, acorn production began at what is now known as Hartsfield-Jackson Airport when a group of businessmen purchased an old cotton gin and began processing corn for local markets and shipment overseas. With World War I raging nearby and demand for food high, production grew rapidly during that wartime period into what is now known as the " Haley Mills Era". After World War II ended, there were few opportunities for agricultural production so industry soon became dominant with heavy employment across various sectors including manufacturing (steelmaking), retail trade (furniture manufacturers), health care (pumpkin processors), light industrial (textile manufacturers) and agriculture (maize growers).
