Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 18,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Chattahoochee River and is the county seat of Fulton County. The area that would become Alpharetta was originally part of the Creek Nation and was first settled by Cherokee Native Americans around 1800. The area became part of Georgia in 1777 when British colonists moved into what is now Fulton County. In 1802, Alpharetta was chartered as a town by James Moultrie, who served as governor of Georgia from 1802 to 1805. In 1836, Alpharetta was merged with other towns in Fulton County to form the city of Atlanta. In 1870, Alpharetta had a population of 23; it had grown to an estimated 100 by 1880 due to cotton planting and economic development along the Chattahoochee River. The community experienced significant growth during World War I when more than 1 million people came through its doors seeking employment in munitions production or military service; many were black American soldiers fighting for America during World War I and World War II. After the war ended, businesses slowly declined until they were closed or sold off during the Great Recession which began in 2008. However, since then there has been resurgence with new businesses opening up such as a brewery and several restaurants including one that serves chicken-and-waffles for breakfast every day beginning November 5th (the first business ever open in this town). Today's downtown retains much of its historical significance with two square blocks (known collectively as "Old Town") containing over 50 buildings dating back to 1800 including remnants of an early Presbyterian church built on land that once belonged to John Randolph who later became president of Georgia (he also purchased adjoining land for use as a courthouse). Another important landmark located within Old Town is called "The Battery" which marks where Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered his army at disagreements about terms following their defeat at battle Ofproperty Ridge near Decaturville on November 8th 1865 after six days' combat against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant - this event is commemorated annually on October 29th with Remembrance Day ceremonies attended by local dignitaries including Mayor Pro Tem Donny Ferguson Jr.. Alpharetta was founded on December 6, 1855 by Capt. George Washington Smith and his wife, Nancy. The town grew quickly and in 1865 it became the county seat of Fulton County. Alpharetta was home to a large slave market from which cotton was bought and sold. The area also produced sugarcane, grapes, apples, and other crops.
