Americus is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,567 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Americus Regional Airport. Amercus was first settled in 1802 by English settlers. It became a town in 1825 and a city in 1885. The merger of two other cities – Macon and Roswell – formed Americus-Roswell Township on January 1, 1987. The area that now makes up Americus was first inhabited by the Creek Tribe of Indians before being claimed by Spain as part of Florida de la Bahia colony in 1692. In 1733, British traders discovered what would become Americus Bayou and named it after George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon (later renamed Mount Vernon Barracks). Captain James Cook sailed past America's most recent landmass on his third voyage around Asia on December 17th, 1777 while cruising off the coast of Georgia when he sighted an island which he named "America" after his Queen Elizabeth II's current flagship HMS Anson (the first successful English settlement in North America). The bayou that would come to be known as Americus Bayou began its course from here through what is now downtown Fulton County on November 6th, 1800 when John Fenton built a small cabin near where present-day First Baptist Church stands for storage purposes only; Fenton later made some improvements to this location which led to his nameakeship for this particular body of water bed mile or so north of downtown Atlanta on what is now Second Street between Peachtree Road and Sandy Springs Boulevard. From here navigationally speaking it continued northeast along US Hwy 129 until reaching today's intersection with I-285 just south of Philips Arena - then still called Abrams Road - at exit #1A within 5 miles or so of downtown Atlanta! In 1802 three pioneer families from England came ashore seeking new land to settle: William & Jemima Hinton, Capt J M Cornell and their children John & Eliza Morse; Obadiah Morse also landed but left early due to religious objections to alcohol being sold there; all were granted 640 acres (2 km²) lot 10 out from Point Lookout lighthouse.. They started building log homes with help from local Indian leaders who provided them with food and shelter during their stay before moving back inland towards Cumberland Island about half way across the bayou for more permanent digs..
