The town of Americus sprang up around this time as a result of this trade activity. It became known as an important center for cotton production because it had a large enough population to support this type of industry. At first, American settlers were content to live near their crops rather than build themselves homes; however, over time they began to demand more space and started building themselves homes. In 1836, George Washington was born in Americus; he would later become the first Ulysses S Grant who served as president of the United States (1865-1897). One day before his inauguration, President Andrew Johnson visited America's then capital city of Atlanta where he met with local leaders including Atlantans John A Whitehead and Samuel Piggott about Reconstruction in south Alabama following the Civil War. After touring several black churches in downtown Atlanta during his visit, Johnson decided that America needed its own African American leader like those found in southern Africa – someone who could represent all Americans not just white ones! And so Vice President Thomas Eagleton was chosen to succeed Johnson on November 2nd 1865 when he resigned due to poor health (Eagleton would be replaced by James Buchananfour days later). After leaving office as Vice President underperforming both politically and economically compared to either Lincoln or Grant himself), Eagleton bought land east of downtown Atlanta near DeKalb Avenue that would eventually become MidtownAtlanta – home today to some major retailers such as Macy's Department Store and Bank Of America Plaza . This purchase represented one step towards improving Atlantans' quality of life following Reconstruction which saw many former slaves move into what are today parts of Downtown ATL – areas that still maintain much poverty despite being among some of wealthiest neighborhoods inAmerica today!
