On July 20, 1846 Parsons set up shop at what is today First Baptist Church on Haymarket Avenue Northeast before he moved westward along I-285 to Macon County in 1850 where he founded Athens Post Telegraph Station No 2 about four miles east ofpresent-day downtown Augusta on account of its strategic location within easy driving distance for traders making between Atlanta and Mobile Bayou de la Ville without having to leave civilization behind them or go through hostile Indian Territory! Captain Samuel Parsons would later be honored with one of GW's trademark items: an oblong brass plaque designating him as "The Pioneer Merchant" located inside The Omni Savannah Hotel east off US 15 south near Interstate 285 northbound exit #4B). This marker tells the story of one man's impact on early Augusta – starting with his establishment of one small business which led to others being established around him including Gainesville Road Chapel (1850), Hawkins & Perkins Furniture Company (1853), City Market Inn (1910), Fourth Baptist Church (1900) – all while living just blocks away from each other across two major thoroughfares! On November 4, 1850 Augustus residents voted 3–1 in favor of incorporation into Muscogee County under then President Millard Fillmore because they saw no alternative other than joining forces with neighboring counties against Atlanta due to concerns over future railroads connecting Charleston downriver and thence out into our region! This vote represented not only leadership among Augustus Residents but alsosolidarity among most Georgians throughout much OF Georgia!! A year later Driggs Bennett donated land northeast corner Third Street/Avenue NW towards West Point for a new courthouse - this building still stands today as one district courthouse active within Muscogee County today! It wasn't until January 9th 1861 that Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest issued orders for all Georgians within Muscogee County except those living southwest along Alabama State Route 11 to leave immediately - this order represented another significant challenge facing our community given our location midway betweenAtlanta proper and Decaturburg on both sides of I-85 corridor!! Today many residents remember January 9th as "The day we were driven out!" For many months prior thereto food supplies running low due primarily to lack Of trees available To produce firewood resulted in extensive damage To homes And businesses throughout town!!! Many people left town specifically anticipating such an event happening so they could return home soon after!!! Despite overwhelming odds well supplied troops arriving late Jan 9th thru Feb 3rd finally putting an endTo hostilities In 1962 construction began on Downtown Park Boulevard which improved lot access leading directlyto downtown parking lots etc.– resultingin increased traffic levels adjacentDowntown park areas !!
