The name Bainbridge comes from the Scottish word for "a small bay". The first settler in what is now Bainbridge was John Bainbridge, who arrived in 1785. He and his family were among the earliest settlers on what is now Bainbridge Island. Other early residents included Andrew McMaster and his wife Sarah Newcomer McMaster. In 1802, James Auld came to Bainbridge from Scotland with his father-in-law Manasseh Cutlert and their families. They founded a tavern called the Old Tavern on North Main Street near present day Midtown mall in 1802-3. In 1811, Ebenezer Eaton established a post office at what is now downtown Bainbridge with mail service coming directly from Philadelphia via boatload of goods brought overland by wagon train drivers known as "theOverlanders." Eaton served as postmaster until 1830 when he moved to Montgomery County and died there that year at age 84 years old. His widow Esther continued postoffice operations until her death in 1860; thereafter it was operated by their son Ebenezer Eaton Jr., who also served as mayor of Athens from 1905 to 1907 before moving back to Alabama for health reasons in 1915. Eaton's store closed its doors after only four months due to financial difficulties caused by currency depreciation during the Mexican–American War (1846). However, another store opened soon thereafter - this time called The Citizens Store - that continued operation until it too closed its doors around 1870 due to lack of customers or competition from other stores on Coles Road near present day Midtown mall. A new store opened up on what is now South Main Street just east of current day Midtown mall in 1873 which became known as The Merchants Store because it carried all sorts of items not available at other stores on Coles Road including groceries, hardware,rentals etc...The Merchants Store lasted until 1955 when it merged with another store located just north of where Midtown currently stands to form one large shopping center known today simply as "Bainbridge Mall". Formerly know as "The mill", this building still stands today and has been used for many different purposes over the years including being home to several restaurants over the years; most notably Hooters which first opened up here in 1978 and continues to operate today under multiple names including Hooters USA & Penthouse Grill α & ε

Bainbridge history goes back to the early 1800s when a group of farmers in the area developed a post office and traded goods with nearby towns. By 1832, Bainbridge had a full-time school and was served by a wagon train from Decatur. The first store opened in 1835, and by 1840 Bainbridge had become an important town in the region. In 1861, Bainbridge became one of three counties in Georgia designated as part of the Americus Area School District. In 1915, Bainbridge was renamed after Wm. H. Bainbridge, one of its most famous citizens who played an important role in Georgia's development as a statehood state.
