Bainbridge is a small town in McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. It was established in 1824 and has since been the seat of McIntosh County. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is located on the eastern edge of McIntosh County and is bordered by the towns of Decatur to the north, Athens to the east, and Pinson to the south. The first mention of Bainbridge occurred in 1824 when James Bainbridge purchased 6 acres (2 ha) of land from John Lookout for $200. At that time it was part of what were known as Creek Nation lands. In 1831, Bainbridge's post office was established, and it remained open until 1907. A year later, Bainbridge became a town under Georgia law following a referendum vote by its citizens. The town's name honors General George Washington Bainbridge who served in both Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War and afterward as governor of Georgia before becoming an influential member of President James Buchanan's cabinet as Secretary of State from 1865-1867. In 1881, William Hargrave built a sawmill at present day downtown Bainbridge which continued operation until 1984 when it went out of business due to economic conditions within McIntosh County at that time. although still standing today it does not appear to be active; however milling products may still be produced there In 1908–1960s residents used local quarries for building materials From 1925-1927 construction began on what would become Gainesville Regional Airport northeast of town while city services were provided at original Municipal Hall across Main Street Municipal Services moved into new facility which opened in 1927 A fire destroyed Municipal Hall on October 14th 1947 which caused much damage including most likely total loss or nearly total lossof all municipal records with some exceptions dating back to 1924
