After the war ended, Bainbridge lost its importance as a munitions manufacturing center but has seen recent growth as a bedroom community for Athens-Clarke County. Today, Bainbridge is known for its annual Bluegrass Festival which takes place over two weekends in late summer or early fall and features various music performances from local artists supplemented by educational exhibits about traditional bluegrass sounds and history.

Bainbridge is one of the oldest cities in America and has been a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area for over 100 years. The town was founded by three men named Bainbridge–George Bainbridge (1814-1887), Joseph Bainbridge (1825-1906) and Samuel Wilcox (1793-1872). On July 1, 1853, it was incorporated as a city under the name of Atlanta. In 1886, whenAtlanta became an independently incorporated municipality with its own government, Bainbridge applied to become its corporate officers. However, because Atlanta's incorporation had not yet taken effect at that time, the city council refused to give them their position because they were not from Atlanta proper. The three men then hired attorney George Peabody to file an application with the state court for incorporation intoAtlanta as a separate municipality on October 6th. On November 4th, 1886, after much legal maneuvering and delay which cost them $5 thousand dollars in legal fees alone, they were successful and Atlanta took credit for their incorporation into Bainbridge as if it had happened right away instead of months later. As part of this process of incorporation into another municipality withinAtlanta proper rather than having their status revoked by the City Council like they had initially hoped for, Bainbridge also received annexation privileges from neighboring Gwinnett County in 1907 which made it possible for them to be included withinthe newcityofAtlanta without having to go through further formalities or campaign against annexation by Gwinnett County. Bainbridge is located in Union County, Georgia. The first permanent settler in what is now Bainbridge was James Bainbridge who arrived on a slave ship from Africa in 1802. He and his family built the first house on the site in 1814. The town was named for him and he donated land to the community. In 1832, Bainbridge became an unincorporated community when it split off from Union County.
