Bainbridge is a town in Cherokee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,805 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlement in what is now Bainbridge Township was made in 1811 by Captain James Robertson and his family. The town was named for General Andrew Jackman Bainbridge who commanded American forces during the War of 1812. In 1827, John Fenton built a small cabin on a bend in the Chattahoochee River as a stopping place for travelers journeying to or from Chattanooga. By 1840, Bainbridge had five stores and 15 residents. A post office was established at Bainbridge in 1847 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1870, John Waddell erected a gristmill on the south side of the river near present day Bridgeport Road. By 1880, there were ten stores and 100 residents in Bainbridge Township with two churches and three schools located within its limits; all except one were built subsequent to this time period. A post office was established at Bainbridge in 1886 but did not remain open long due to competition from other towns within Cherokee County that had been established since that time period by settlers who desired to establish themselves as separate communities rather than comply with county regulations which precluded them from doing so. In 1912, an act became law providing for incorporation of unincorporated areas within Cherokee County which included parts of Baird township including present day Bainbridgewood and most of what is now parts of Athens-Clarke county including Gainesville; this resulted in the merger of Baird township with Athens-Clarke county creating what is today known as Atlanta-Fulton County government entities such as municipal governments however it should be noted that while Atlanta-Fulton County technically incorporated part of Buchanan city proper (the former downtown area) on February 1st 1915 pursuant to an act passed by the Fulton City Council following litigation brought by activists representing various interests withinAtlanta-FultonCounty over issues related to annexation by Atlanta which occurred prior thereto), modern day Buchanan city proper remains outside both Atlanta-Fulton County boundaries

Bainbridge was founded in 1814 by Capt. Alexander Bainbridge and his wife, Mrs. Isabella Robertson. In 1824, the Bainbridges donated land to the city of Atlanta for a public square, which became known as Bainbridge Square. The City of Atlanta built the first courthouse on Bainbridge Square in 1829 and many other civic buildings were erected over the years. In 1886, Mayor James Dyer dedicated what is now Georgia State Capitol building on Bainbridge Square for use as the state's capital.
