Buford, Georgia is a town of just over 9,000 people located in Cobb County. It has been inhabited by the same people since prehistoric times and was known as Hahutago. The first African American to live in Buford was James Weldon Johnson, who arrived in 1881. In 1907, the town had its first school.During World War II, Buford became one of the most important munitions manufacturing centers in the country because it produced shells for both the United States and Great Britain. The plant closed in 1945 but reopened in 1984 as an ammunition sales center. Today, Buford is home to two businesses that produce ammunition: Ammunition Sales Company and Ammo Inc.

A log cabin from this time remains standing today just north of the current town center. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson moved his army downstream from Chattanooga to cross the Chattahoochee River and attack Mobile Bay. General James Kenedy organized an infantry brigade under Colonel John Witherspoon to block Jackson's march and stop his advance southward along Mobile Bayou towards Athens, Alabama. The battle of Horseshoe Bend took place on September 15th1812 near present day Buford off US-41A near where Macon Avenue intersects I-85E today
