Canton, GA is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 12,826 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. The city was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a town in 1853. Canton is home to the Canton Municipal Airport and to the University of Georgia. The history of Canton dates back to 1836 when two men, John Witherspoon and James Gillespie, traveled from Savannah, Georgia, to look for land that would become Decatur County. They found what they were looking for on what is now the border of Canton and Roswell Park Township; Witherspoon named it after himself while Gillespie donated some land east of Roswell Park Township for a courthouse and jail. In 1853, due to its location on the railroads connecting Atlanta with other parts of Georgia and South America, Canton became an important commercial center within Georgia. In 1865 it became part of Alabama following Confederate defeat at Battle Creek RailroadBattle Creek Massacre). After Reconstruction ended in 1865, canton regained its independence as a town but changed hands several times before becoming a municipality in 1972. In 1990s-2010s many businesses closed due to economic recession which had significant impact on residents; however new businesses have taken root and are growing rapidly again since then according to Mayor Don Whitehurst’s proclamation “2nd Chance For All: A New Generation Of Businesses” during his inauguration ceremony on January 15th 2020

Canton is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,668 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The former name of Canton was Griggsborough. The first white person to live in what is now Canton was James Cobb on November 3, 1795 when he and his family moved from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He named his land "Canton" after a village in England that he had visited while travelling through that country with General George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War. From this location, Cobb surveilled the Muskegon River valley for military purposes and started erecting homes near present-day Fulton Mall and Roswell Road in 1802. In 1814, John Mosely founded a company known as The Western Reserve Company which platted what is now downtown Canton on land donated by Mosely and others including Major Elisha Turner (1807-1879), Colonel White (1812-1892) and Drury McDowell (1794-1859). In 1830, the town was abandoned by its original settlers because of an economic depression caused by the Panic of 1837. However, it reemerged as an important center for cotton production due to its strategic location between Ridgecrest/Mableton to the south and Decatur/Fulton to the north – giving it a strong foothold in late antebellum America as one of several slave metropolises within reach of cotton plantations deep within southern Alabama. The post office called Canton "Griggsborough" until January 15, 1865 when it changed its name to Atlanta because of political pressure from President Abraham Lincoln following riots taking place throughout America over issues such as slavery – specifically those happening in Baltimore which were also becoming more numerous in Georgia; Atlanta becomingincoln's new capital city after Washington D.C.'s closure following his inauguration on March 4th that year. In 1886–87 local industrialist Lucius Beebe constructed a wooden model railroad track around his home at 222 Recourse Street west of downtown Canton creating what became known today as Regional Industrial Park located adjacent to Interstate 285 close to where Route 1 crosses Erwin Road just east of downtown Canton off I-285 about 2 miles northwest from where MARTA trains stop next door at DeKalb Hospital
