The name comes from General James Macon's attack on Fort Beauregard in 1819 near present day Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1846, John Fenton built a log cabin onpresent day Mulberry Street for himself and his family. By 1860, there were only 10 residents in Cartersville. However, by 1870 there were over 100 people living here. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided the town and burned it to the ground with artillery fire while its inhabitants were inside their homes. The burning of Cartersville marked one of the most significant moments in local history because it demonstrated how powerful Confederate forces could be when they raid an unprotected place like this. This event also helped inspire nearbyauntyofnumerousfurthercompletionofthesouthgeorgia railway system which would eventually bring great wealth and prosperity to our community over time
