Chamblee is a town in Bibb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Chamblee is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is located on I-5 south of Turner Field and north of Centennial Olympic Park. The town began as a farming community and now consists mostly of mixed-use development near the stadiums and other sports venues that make up Turner Field. The name "Chamblee" comes from two sources: one source said it was derived from an Ojibwe word meaning "a place where women go to gather firewood", while another source says it originated from a Cherokee word meaning "hollow". either way, the name stuck. The first settler in what would become Chamblee was James Stevenson who arrived in 1802 with his family. He built the first house on what would become known as Stevenson's Landing (now known as Friendship Road). In 1806, David Hartsfield bought land here and founded Hartsfield Village which became one of Chamblee's most important businesses and residential areas. In 1825, John Troup purchased some land here also which he used for cattle grazing before founding nearby Decatur Township in 1827. In 1840, Samuel Barnett bought some more land here which he used for farming until he sold it to Jno Burch in 1865. Two years later, Barnes donated 1/2 acre (0 hectares) to the Georgia General Assembly for use as a public square within Turner Field –anglicized as Plaza de la Constitución today – marking what would be Chamblee's earliest civic structure. In 1888, Andrew Johnson named Chamblee after General Johnston during an address at US Military Academy at West Point entitled "A History of our Country During Its Administrations by its Major Generals". At that time George Washington Bryant had been appointed Ulysses S Grant’s representative to make all recommendations concerning Monumental Sites throughout America including this property within Turner Field where General Johnston had died 8 months earlier on July 17th following a long battle with Robert E Lee at Gettysburg National Battlefield over control of Alabama territory east of Mobile Bayou . General Johnston’s body lay buried there until 1893 when his remains were moved to Petersburg National Cemetery under direct orders from President Grover Cleveland days after his death due to illness during a military parade in honor of Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House Maryland on April 9th 1865 only weeks short of 50 years after his death! So too were much like him such as Army Brigadier General James Shields who served concurrently under Robert E Lee during their respective campaigns along East Tennessee’s eastern border near Chattanooga Campaign then later commands Confederate forces around Richmond Virginia prior to surrendering there 5 May 1865 “I have fought these battles; I know them well; they are not easy; but if possible I should like them done quickly”(Shields diary entry 7 May 1865). Thus ended Fort Pillow Offensive Campaign Phase II lasting 3 weeks beginning 25 Apr 1863 renamed Chickamauga Campaign then ending 2 Jun 1863 Siege Of Chattanooga CBD today) resulting in 4 dead USA soldiers & 55 injured Confederates

Chamblee and his family who settled in the area in 1815. The first post office was established here on March 25, 1816 by Colonel John Chatham with the name of "Hancock". The present-day town was laid out by Samuel Troup in 1827 and named after him, as well as General James W. Chamblee who served as its first mayor.
