On November 1, 1886, Decatur became one of two cities in Georgia to receive electric lights; Atlanta did so two years later on December 25th. On December 12th 1907 DeKalb School District No 236 opened its doors with grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade located at 5120 NW First Street which would be followed by Dawson Academy which opened on September 2nd 1912 also located at 5120 NW First Street which would merge with Gwinnett County Schools when they were created in 1965 In 1967 alone there were over 100 businesses that opened up shop downtown including Mastercard Plaza and Sears Roebuck & Co.. In 1978 construction began on the current building that stands today called Riverfront Park which included a new library and other facilities such as a Wade Arena used by NBA games until 1995 when it was replaced by Philips Arena .
