At that time Wilkinson had been made Brigadier General in the militia service by President George Washington shortly before his death at age 47 years old following a long illness caused by smallpox contracted during an expedition into Transylvania during the American Revolutionary War In 1820s there were two plantations near present day West Point Street & Park Avenue - one called "Pine Bluff" which belonged to Major George Walton; another plantation called "Moses Hicks" which belonged to Dr Samuel Hicks Sr.. There were also several stores and residences built between 1800 – 1830 including: Acker’s store built 1800 by Ebenezer Acker; White’s store built 1800 by William White; Beal’s store built 1800 by John Beal In 1830 slaveowners petitioned for emancipation but their request was not accepted until after Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 Fayetteville grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between Atlanta and Savannah making it an important cotton port connecting both cities with goods exported throughout Southeast Asia and South America . An early settler in this area was Nicholas Merrick who purchased 640 acres (248 ha) on March 4, 1799 from Thomas Graves Fayetteville became an incorporated city on February 14th 1904 with a population of 10,000 people . The first post office opened in 1907 . In 1915 Mayor John Hargrave resigned after being indicted on bribery charges involving businessman Jernigan Youngblood On October 20th 1916 local citizens fires destroyed part of Atlantica Bldg., later known as Sinclair Tower which housed newspapers printing presses used for newsboy cartoons starting around 1880 AD
