This was due in part to America's involvement in World War I and II – both of which caused significant troop concentrations within the city limits.

With a land area of only 1 square mile (0.4 km2), it ranks as one of the smallest cities in America by total area. Fayetteville began as a small community on the Chattahoochee River near its junction with Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard in what is now Sandy Springs, Fulton County. In 1851, when Fayetteville became part of Macon County, it had a population of about 100 residents and was known for its fertile farmland and cotton plantations; however, by 1860, when it became part of Cobb County, its population had decreased to about 30 people and it was known as an agricultural town with few industrial businesses. In 1886, wealthy entrepreneur John Milledge purchased 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Fayetteville from Andrew Johnson for $10 per acre ($660 per hectares). Milledge named his new development "Milledge Place" in honor of his original investor. The first homes were built there in 1890 and sales increased after Milledge advertising that he would provide electricity to all residents on equal terms regardless of wealth or political affiliation. However this promise never materialized because central Georgia lacked local power connection until after World War II when service was extended to Athens through wires from downtown Atlanta
