Fayetteville is a city in southwest Georgia, United States. The population was 34,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. The namesake of the city is General Andrew Jackson who fought in the American Revolution and served as its first president. In 1847, Fayetteville was named after Judge John Covington Fayette, one of Georgia's original Territorial Legislators from Decatur County. Fayetteville was founded on December 24, 1837 by General Andrew Jackson with 3 hundred men under his command when he learned that a Creek Indian village had been sacked by a force led by James Kenedy and others. Afterward General Jackson ordered all travelers south-southwest up the Chattahoochee River to cross over into Georgia so they could be sold into slavery or killed if they did not leave within twenty-four hours. Only 27 people made it across without being killed or enslaved. The town quickly became known for its cotton plantations which were developed starting in the late 1830s as a result of federal subsidies given to farmers through the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938. By 1840 most citizens worked on plantations but small numbers also worked outside agriculture on small farms or in mercantile businesses such as stores and hotels that sprang up around town during this time period. Cotton production ceased during World War II because of improvement in tractor technology and other factors but has since resumed thanks to modern plantings techniques and continues to grow at an annual rate of 10%. From 1850 until 1903, Fayetteville was home to Confederate General Joseph Easley’s headquarters during his campaign against Ulysses S Grant’s Union forces at Missionary Ridge near Athens. After Easley’s death, his headquarters shifted to Auburn, Alabama). Fayetteville has had many notable people associated with it over its history: Robert E Lee (president of Virginia; general officer during both world wars), Stonewall Jackson (a Confederate general during the American Civil War), Winthrop Rockefeller (founder of Chase Manhattan Bank) and Eleanor Roosevelt (first lady of United States).
