In 1821, Gainesville became the second incorporated municipality in Georgia when it joined with Macon County to form the new county of Fulton. In 1825, Gainville annexed part of Athens County and became an official city under a charter granted by Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded central Georgia; while marching through Gainesville he burned most of the village while residents were inside their homes. Early's raid effectively destroyed much of eastern Georgia's infrastructure which had been rebuilding following the Civil War including Gainesville. Gainingville experienced some reconstruction activity during this time including a blend of African American and white workers who helped build many local businesses such as banks, churches, schools and homes until Reconstruction ended in 1877

In 1881, Gainesville became one of several towns that formed Cobb County after Atlanta annexed it from Fulton County. In 1907, Gainesville joined Cobb County as an incorporated municipality and has experienced rapid growth ever since – its population reached 25,000 by 2010! The city block which encompasses most of downtown is home to many high-profile businesses including Coca-Cola Company’s Georgia headquarters (the world’s largest), JBL Audio & Technology Center (the world’s largest audio/visual center), Philips Lighting®, Macy’s department store (the third-largest retailer in America), and Walmart Supercenter ().
