In 1811, Pemberton married Susannah Hunt, daughter of Major Nathan Hunt of Charlestown Township (now Roswell). They started a farm west of their original cabin and named it Johns Creek after John Pemberton's father-in-law, General James Robertson Johnston. In 1820, the tract that became Johns Creek was purchased by Colonel Alexander Macon for $5,000 from Trustees ofthe Land Company. Macon named it "Macon's Valley". The first school in Johns Creek was opened in 1830 by Mrs. Mary Beard with three students and one teacher; it continued until 1835 when an addition to the school building provided classrooms for twelve students and one teacher. Reverend Elijah White taught religious services there from 1840 until his death in 1850; he is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery near where his home still stands today.
