Kingsland was founded in 1802 by Captain James Kingsbury and his family as a small colony on the south bank of the Chattahoochee River. In 1812, when King George II of Britain granted land to three Georgians for settlement near what is now Midtown Atlanta, Kingsland became one of those settlers. The first store in Kingsland opened in 1824, and growth slowed during the 1830s as cotton prices plummeted during the Great American Famine of that decade. But by 1840, with new plantations being established along the Chattahoochee around Kingsland and elsewhere in Fulton County, cotton production resumed its upward trajectory andKingsland experienced rapid growth thereafter. In 1849–50 Elijah White built Whites Mill on what is now West End Avenue just north of downtown Kingsland; this mill processed flour from local cornfields into gold coins that were donated to be used by Athens’ Mint (later known as National Museum). White also operated an sawmill which produced lumber for buildings and other purposes until about 1870. During Reconstruction Kingstown served as a center for black political activity in southern Fulton County due to its location within easy reach of white voters who were then eager to curry favor with General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Ku Klux Klan organization and other white supremacists throughout the South during Reconstruction.

In 1924, when Atlanta was created as a city, Kingsland merged with other nearby towns to formAtlanta. Today, most of the original buildings from the early days are still standing in downtown Atlanta, including the old courthouse where Georgia General Assembly met in 1811-12.
The early history of Kingsland, Georgia is obscure. Possibly the first European to visit what is now Georgia was a French trader, Aeneas de Montaigne, in 1565. The earliest evidence of habitation on the present site of Kingsland came from Indian traders who visited in the late 18th century. It was not until 1802 when a group of British military officers established a post at what is now Kingsland after encountering hostile natives near that location. By 1815, Kingsland had a population of about 50 people and was part of the Cherokee Nation. In1820, following the Creek War, King's Landing became an American military installation and later became known as Fort McIntosh. In 1837, following the US annexation of Texas, Fort McIntosh became part of American forces stationed in Alabama and soon renamed Fort Pickens. In 1840 it reverted to its original name and remained under US jurisdiction until it was decommissioned in 1865.
