Milledgeville is located in south Georgia, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta. It was founded by James Milledge in 1822 as a cotton plantation and became the county seat of Gwinnett County in 1851. The town became a manufacturing center for firearms after the opening of the Savannah and Charleston Railroad in 1855. In 1907, Milledgeville passed a law creating the first state-level gun licensing program in America. The town has since become one of the most important firearms communities in Georgia. The city's origins can be traced back to James Milledge, who set up a cotton plantation near what is now known as downtown Milledgeville in 1822. After several years of hard work, James had enough land to establish his own rancho de pinto (ranch of rice) and began planting rice. In 1825, he married Maria Jane Ladd and their children were born at his home – Alma Jane (1826-1910), James Witherspoon (1828-1900), Alpheus Randolph (1830-1920), Evaline Elizabeth Shriver Grant (1832-1905), Anna Louise Hemings McFadden (1834-1909) and Ellen Eleanor Hodge Grant (1838-1920). In 1907, when Gwinnett County was created from part of Fulton County, Milledgeville became its county seat. The new courthouse was built on what is now Green Street within walking distance of all the businesses that would soon grow around it: grocery stores, dry goods stores, clothing stores etcetera. The courthouse served as the home for many years of Judge Charles Hardwick until he moved to Hollywood Hills during World War II and replaced him with Justice Edward Jaffe. After prohibition was repealed in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt,Milledgeville rapidly entered into an era dominated by gangsters and bootleggers who controlled much of southern Georgia's alcohol trade During Prohibition period gun sales increased threefold while crime rates decreased only slightly due to efforts by local law enforcement officials to keep order among licensed dealers while allowing citizens to purchase legally taxed liquor without fear of being caught with contraband weapons

Milledgeville first began forming in 1815 as a small community nearGAINESVILLE, when General James McAllister's military forces moved from Chattanooga to take control of what was then the Creek Nation. Many of these soldiers were recruited from within Cobb County and this town soon grew up around them. The area now known as Milledgeville was surveyed by André de la Salle in 1785 and named for Lieutenant-General John Milligan who had led British troops against designs by George Washington during the American Revolution. The mill race that started in 1811 continued until 1880, when it stopped because of low water levels caused by drought. Today, remnants of this early milling history can be seen throughout downtown Milledgeville including five contributing buildings on Main Street: The First National Bank (1812), Masonic Temple (1816), Aiken & Johnston Coffee House (1827), Landis Opera House (1828) and Peachtree Hotel (1910). This building still stands today as part of Piggott’s Hardware store which closed in 2006 but its facade still faces Main Street! In 1830, Cotton Ginners built their first ginnery here and this industry continues to play a significant role in Milledgeville today with many businesses based here including Coca Cola World Headquarters (2002) next door to Piggott’s Hardware store, among others! In 1865, Elijah Hicks founded Hicks Shoe Store adjacent to his printing shop on 4th Street which became one of Milledgeville’s most successful businesses until it closed its doors in 1984 but its footprints can still be found inside Piggott’s Hardware store today! Over time there have been numerous other businesses established here such as Sunglasses Unlimited(1993) across from FedEx ground shipping center; JBL Audio(2006); Home Depot(2011); Carpet One(2012); Belk(2013) just east off I-75 exit 133B; Chick-fil-A restaurants such as Waffle House&CarlJr.(2005), Hardees Jr.(2006), Subway sandwich chain franchised out(); Lowe’s Home Improvement stores like Lowe’s/Lawn Care Plus(2009)), Sears/Kmart stores like Sears/Kmart Outlet Center()], Sam's Club warehouse clubs like Sam's Club Warehouse Clubs())], Kosher Markets such as Kosher Markets());] ], Realtor associations such as REALTORAssociations(),[]])].

The name "Milledgeville" comes from one of its founders, James Wills Milledge who settled in what is now downtown Milledgeville in 1802 and named it for his earlier home near Marietta, Georgia. In 1831 James Wills married Lucy Searcy and they moved to what is now southwest corner of Peachtree Street and Southside Avenue on their farmstead known as Meadow View which they continued to operate until their death in 1886. The town's early years were difficult due to lack of transportation and water resources. A wagon wheel road was built linking MilledgeVILLE with Marietta by 1827 but it was abandoned due to lack of traffic or resources during that time period. In 1830 two brothers founded the first school in what would become Milledgeville; one served as an elementary school while the other became a high school after being donated by Reverend Jacob Miller (1799-1875). The first post office opened in 1832, serving as a stop on stagecoach routes between Dalton and Marietta. By 1840 there were enough settlers living in Middledale Township to form a village under the name "Milton." However, Milton never grew large enough either because of lack of transportation or resources or because there wasn't enough demand for its services since most people lived close to Dalton or MARTA stations. In 1849 James Bogue purchased 5 acres (2 ha) northeast of present day downtown Milledgeville from Hiram Paulding for $100 cash only; this land would later be used for the new Cobb Galleria amusement park which opened on November 15, 1909 adjacent to current day Coca Cola Park across Macon Boulevard from downtown Miledgeville Square Shopping Center). Bogue named his new township "Milton" after himself so that everyone could find him if they needed help finding their way around without having to ask anyone else - something he realized would be important when he started selling country homes east of town along MacArthur Boulevard beginning in about 1870s-. In 1865 John Coker located what is now northeast corner Dayton Avenue and Northside Road on his plantation called Prairie View where he began growing cotton farming operations which continue today into 2018 despite repeated attempts by developers over the years – all resulting in various lawsuits including one filed against Coker Estate LLC last year alleging fraudulent claims made about those operations).
