Milledgeville, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 9,591 at the 2010 census. The history of Milledgeville begins with General James Gadsden who arrived in 1837 from England with his family for slave trading purposes. General Gadsden had many opportunities to experience life on American soil because he served under President George Washington during the Revolutionary War and later served as Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. After serving his time in prison for treason, General Gadsden returned to America and started developing land near present-day Milledgeville into what would become an important agricultural center in Fulton County. He also began building homes for himself and his families which he named “Gadsden” after himself or “Jimmie” after his father-in-law (John Jumper). By 1845, Gadsden had acquired over 800 acres (3 square miles) around present day MilledgeVILLE which would eventually serve as part of his plantations holdings called “Grunty Plantation” today known simply as “Gadget Farm”). In 1865, Gadgets sold most of his holdings to John Dillard who built what is now Piedmont Savings Bank Building on Federal Highway between US 19/20and FM 517/518 currently used by MARTA bus service . On July 1st 1862 Captain John Futchman commandeered two steamboats that were moored at Chattahoochee River landing just north of present day GADGET FARMsteads downstream from Canal Landing Bridge now known as Governor William Beall Park visitor center across First Street from Church House Northgate Shopping Center east side lot next doorformerly siteofMarriottHotels passenger facility formerly knownasGovernorWilliamBeallPark visitorcenter .
