Norcross is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Norcross was John Norris, who arrived in 1802. The village of Norcross was founded by him and his family on the northeast corner of present-day US 22 and Old Suwanee Road. The original name for the settlement was "Norrisborough". A post office called Norrisborough was established in 1809, and remained in operation until it closed in 1904. In 1814, James Denny platted what would become Norcross Township on land that he had purchased from Isaiah Hilliard. Denny named the township after himself because he had come to America as a young man and seen "a great many small towns" but could not find one with which to form a connection He also hoped that this new township would encourage others to settle there because it would be near enough to major cities for trade purposes and easy access to transportation amenities such as roads and trains. Denny's township contained only about twenty families when it was created; however, over time it grew rapidly due largely to immigration by Irish people fleeing potato famine conditions back home. By 1850, Norcross had more than three hundred residents. In 1881, an act of Congress made Norross an incorporated town with full powers over its own affairs; however, just four years later (1885), incorporation again failed due to lack of support from some influential citizens including then-Mayor John Bledsoe Sr.. However,Norross did manage two important achievements during this time: One was becoming one of the few places in Fulton County where electric lights were lit up; the other was hosting its first municipal election ever (held on November 6th), which saw victory for incumbent Mayor JB Bledsoe Jr.. In 1907 spearheaded by then-Mayor WF Whittemore and City Attorney Cephus Edwards III., Norcross became a city under state law - though some argue that this achievement should have been given more credit because city services were already provided by various volunteer organizations such as streetlight operators) Norcross officially became a city on January 1st 1912 when legislation passed by both houses of the Georgia General Assembly authorized it pursuant to an Act of Congress entitled "An Act To amend certain Acts concerning Cities And Towns". On July 1st 1916 - less than two months before World War I began -norrisboroughs main thoroughfare Orlando Avenue became downtown Atlanta's first municipally run avenue after being widened from two lanes each way into four following completion of several expensive projects financed by local taxpayers . Another important event occurred during these years: The opening of Braselton Boulevard eastward from formerly downtown Atlanta beyond now known as Midtown – making Anchorage Park available within walking distance for all Atlantans regardless of social class or economic status .
