In 1851, Hiram Rhodes began construction on what would become Emory University just east of downtown Riverdale – making it one of only two universities founded outside OfAtlanta proper during that time period (the other being Southern Illinois University Carbondale). The university has since grown into one of America’s leading research institutions with campuses throughout North America and Europe.
