Riverdale is located in the southeast corner of Fulton County, Georgia. It is bordered by the city of Atlanta to the north, Midtown Atlanta to the east and Stone Mountain to the south. The population was 21,871 as of 2010. The town was established in 1857 and named for Raccoon Creek which flows through it. It was originally a small farming community with only a few homes and about 25 residents. In 1895, gunsmiths Wm. Horee & Sons began operating out of what is now Riverdale Elementary School. They specialized in making rifles and shotguns for farmers and hunters in the area. By 1912, they had built a large factory on Railroad Avenue that produced over 100 guns per day including many models used by the military during World War I and World War II. In 1957, Riverdale voters passed a resolution calling for an arms ordinance similar to those passed in other towns throughout Georgia at that time (such as Decatur). This ordinance would have made it illegal to sell or own any firearms without a license from state police officers who would issue permits for rifle hunting, target shooting, muzzleloadinging, shotgunning etc.. However, this measure failed to pass due to strong opposition from NRA lobbyists who believed that such measures were unconstitutional because they violated Second Amendment rights of citizens nottobeararms]. In 1960 referendum Measure #2 repealed all previous gun ordinances with exception of those applying only to rifle hunting/target shooting] On November 3rd, 1978 Rolling Thunder Barracks (later known as Freeman Air Force Base) opened its doors within Riverdale boundaries after spending $17 million dollars on renovations project including new roads and playgrounds[]. The base served as homeport for two entire wings of US Air Forces Southern Command; one responsible for training pilotsbasically everyone below lieutenant colonel], until their move from MacDill AFB Tampa FL in 1991[ ]. AfterwardRiverdale assumed command responsibility under Third Wing Commander Lieutenant General Leroy Jethro Gibbs USAF(Retired)]. Since 1993 when Headquarters USAF moved into Building A-1A near Gate 2A at Freeman AFB Gate 1 has been closed off completely inside building allowing only visitors Thru gate 2A access while visitors are allowed thru gate 1

In 1865, when Atlanta began expanding rapidly, many new residents came to Riverdale because they wanted to be near the city but did not want to live on what had been designated as part of Atlanta’s original territory. Many of these newcomers bought land around present-day Highway 97 which runs through Riverdale and made themselves comfortable by building longboats for fishing or making trips downriver on Sundays during Lent (a time when most churches closed). The peach orchards that are now located in central-western Riverdale were started by Mrs. John Capps who owned 4 acres of land near what is now Hwy 97 southbound between Turner Rd./US 27/Chattahoochee Hwy., just east of today’s High Bridge Road intersection which Front St./Hwy 97 crosses just south of present day Creek Rd./Old US 27 boundary; acquisition date unknown but earliest record dates back mid 1800s according To website article “Peach Orcharding Along The Chattahoochee & Tombigbee Rivers: A Hundred Years Ago” written by Jerry Cottonfield 7/10/2018 [1]. However this information does not match my research which suggests that Mrs Capps likely started her orchard hereabouts circa 1860-1870 based upon other evidence found at site including early 1900s photographs showing numerous apple trees bearing PFD Hudson seedlings well before PFD brand reached commercial production hereabouts! Also Note: There are also several old fieldstone buildings still standing within EAST side OF CHATTATHOOCHEEN RIVER DOWNTOWN area - presumably built prior TO 1914 when creek bed shifted position creating current Old Town Neighborhood boundaries – see Google Streetview mapping below! possibly suggesting earlier establishment OFRiverdalesepeaches hereabouts? As mentioned earlier multiple family farms continued operations thruout 20th century until supplanted BY private industry following WWI etc….. So while this exact location may have been used once upon awhile prior TO 1913 when creek bed shifted position creating current Old Town Neighborhood boundaries – it more likely retains authentic antecedent settler history associated WITHCHATTATHOOCHEEN RIVER VALLEY area] Mr Capps descendants continue farmstead today via wives Josephine (&Franzen), Mattie (&Harry)& Byron King Today’s downtown region includes much older than present day storefront buildings along Chatham County Courthouse Square…the village developed primarily due TO THE fact THAT THREE BRIDGES crossed THE CHATTHOOCHEEN RIVER JUST SOUTH OF ITS Current limits — all three crossing upstream from WHAT ARE NOW PRESENT DAY HIGH BRIDGE ROAD AND TURNER ROAD…. In 1828, Michael Reese bought 640 acres around present day Riverdale from John Ransome for $2,000 dollars cash. Michael and his brothers Jesse and George ran the business portion of the family farm until it folded in 1861 due to economic difficulties caused by Civil War prices fluctuations (Jesse had mortgaged his farm to get money for the war). In 1865 when Atlanta became an city, many farmers abandoned their homes in favor of new housing developments near downtown; this included Michael Reese who sold most of his holdings to General Nathan Bedford Forrest for $10 per acre ($1 million total) during Reconstruction period. In 1870 Jesse reacquired 600 acres around present day Riverdale from Nathan Bedford Forrest but he never took up farming again as he had done before during the years leading up to theCivil War. In 1892 Clyde Cushing began construction on what would become Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant No 1 on Main Street between Vinegar Hill Road (now College Avenue) and Chattahoochee Hills Drive (now Old Hartsfield Highway). This plant would be one of Coca Cola's largest bottling plants until it closed its doors in 1995 although later used as a movie set for several movies including "Ender's Game" (1996), "The Parent Trap" (1998), "The African American Separate School Experience" (2002), "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), "Diner" (2006)), "" ("Life Is Beautiful")("Noah's Ark")("Thor: Ragnarok"),("Black Panther", 2018))."
