The first documented shootings taking place in Rome were on July 22nd, 1865 when three men were shot at a fairground by two shooters who claimed to be part of the Confederate army. There have been many fires that have taken place at various locations in Rome over the years, but the most famous target shooting event took place on November 15th, 1911 when seventy-one gunmen from fifteen different states participated in what became known as “Rome”s Great Gun Festival.
Rome is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the capital of the Rome County. It was founded on April 14, 1784, by General James Oglethorpe as Rome on the Altamaha River, which he named for his father-in-law, King George III of England. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Rome was first settled by Atlantans in the late 18th century after they crossed the Altamaha River from Alabama and moved downriver to find a better land prospecting campaign led by Captain John Smith in 1786–87. In 1802, Rome became part of Hood County when it was formed from parts of Clarke and Catoosa counties following Georgia's admission to the United States as a state in 1801. When Georgia lost its status as a slave state after Emancipation in 1865, Rome reverted back to its original name; however, it continues to be called "the City of James" today because that is what most people call it locally. The first buildings erected within Roman limits were log cabins near what is now downtown Athens (then known simply as "the Village"). These were replaced over time with more permanent structures such as churches and schools; one early school building still stands today on Peachtree Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue (now Dunwoody Boulevard). In 1832 Romans voted to erect their own jail, which remain extant today on Lumpkin Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue (now Sandy Springs Boulevard). Located just east of present day Fulton Square at North Liberty Street/Highway 421N/I-85W), this jail served as an important stop for criminals dispatching out into rural areas far beyond Georgian town limits before being supplanted by more centralized jails built closer to urban centers starting around 1850s onward – including ones located inside modern Atlanta proper where law enforcement had become increasingly centralized since Reconstruction began several decades earlier due largely to advancements made in transportation infrastructure during that time period culminating in construction of Interstate 85 bypassing much older villages like Athens altogether). By 1860s most residents within Roman boundaries had either relocated or died off completely due various factors such as water shortages caused by deforestation across much of central Georgia brought about by new agricultural practices culminating with large cotton plantations established there beginning in earnest just prior thereto – primarily along I-85 corridor resulting in vast acres becoming available for development without any need for formal CITY GOVERNANCE or zoning changes whatsoever! The remaining few residents who remained behind gradually lost all power over their lives through lack thereof relative both politically speaking given that no governing body existed within city limits preceding independence from British crown rule when local government effectively ceased operations effective November 3rd 1800 via total seizure & confiscation of all physical assets belonging therein) followed soon thereafter by complete social degradation & alcoholism leading eventually to total anarchy ensuing until finallyended hostilities & annexation back under British Crown rule effective December 15th 1801 upon final victory over existing Confederate forces thereby establishingofficial sovereignty & territorial integrity duly recognized thereby)! Today, however, Roma neighborhoods are home to large numbers of people from all over the world who have made Rome their home since ancient times due to its strategic location within easy reach of many major global cities including Paris, London and Frankfurt.
