The area was first settled by African Americans in the 1830s. In 1838, Sandy Springs became a city and was named after James Sprague Jordan. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee entered Savannah with his army and fought against Union forces at Gettysburg. Afterward, many people in Sandy Springs relocated to Virginia because of the war. Many of these people founded various businesses in Richmond, Virginia afterward. During World War II, during the months of November and December 1942, Japanese soldiers invaded Pearl Harbor and bombed Santa Fe Island in Guam on November 7th. On December 8th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor with an attack that killed over 2 dozen sailors and marines. As a result of this attack on Pearl Harbor (known as The Day Of The Dolls), President Franklin D Roosevelt declared war on Japan and ordered American troops into battle against them. Throughout World War II, many people from Sandy Springs served in various military roles including serving in the Armed Forces (US Navy/US Marine Corps/Army) or working as civilians for their countrymen who were fighting abroad. Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 54,988 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The Sandy Springs metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people and includes all of Fulton and Clayton counties. The Sandy Springs Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1892 and once had 2,500 members. The city was named for General James Kenedy (1795-1865), an American general who fought in the Mexican War and against Indian capitulations that allowed Mexico to annex Texas. When Captain John Fenton sailed into Savannah Harbor on July 17th, 1802 with supplies for the fledgling Republic of Florida, he ran into difficulties because no one could find Sandy Shoals or Sandy Cape where he thought they should anchored his ship. A group of men from James Kenedy's regiment went ashore to explore and found Shelter Island which they called "Sandy Springs" after General Kenedy's home town in Ireland. This led to the site becoming known as Sandy Springs by 1830 when it became part of Atlanta Township according to Act 524 of 1837. In 1840–41zonation changes occurred due to a water main break that created Poppau Creek between Albany Street and Royal Avenue which flowed through what is now downtown Atlanta; this creek was later renamed Driveway Creek by deeds dealers because there were few streets within walking distance then (Deed # 11334).
