Union City is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Union City is located on the Savannah River. It was founded in 1839 by African Americans and their slaves as part of the Cherokee Nation. The first white person to live in Union City was John Gadsden who arrived in 1838 with his family from Mobile, Alabama. He founded what would become Gadsden County and named it for himself after General Jackson's home state of Tennessee. A year later, another white settler, James Brockenbrough, came to Union City and purchased 1/2 acre (0.18 km²) of land from John Gadsden for $5 per acre ($135 total). In 1840 Brockenbrough built the first log cabin in Union City and started trading with Native Americans nearby. In 1841 Union City had a population of just five people when two steamboats deposited about 150 passengers at a wharf on the Savannah River for passage downriver to Jacksonville, Florida; one steamboat made it all the way but sank on its return trip due to faulty navigation. The community quickly grew up around this wharf; within two years there were 10 houses and a store There were also several small boats moored at the wharf which supplied food for local residents and freight for traders upstream along the river. By 1850 Union City had over 100 residents including 10 Methodist missionaries stationed here among other religious groups active in Georgia during this time period During Reconstruction Union City struggled economically because most black men working downtown were sold into slavery while many white men continued working Here however some unions did form such as those formed by freedmen to protect themselves against discrimination by their former masters
