In 1928, Union City became home to Eastern State Penitentiary which served as a maximum security prison until it closed in 2009. Additionally, during this time period Union City lost many businesses due to World War II shortages of materials such as steel and aluminum needed for war production. However, since then some new businesses have started up in downtown Union City including restaurants and bars along with an increasing number of startup companies that provide services such as digital marketing or data entry for small businesses. During recent years there has been an increase in property values within downtown UnionCity thanks largely to increased demand from developers who are looking for locations close to multiple transportation options (such as MARTA) and shopping opportunities (such as Walmart). Despite these benefits however Downtown still suffers from low traffic levels due mainly to its location surrounded by major highways making it difficult for pedestrians and cyclists alike To get around town easily; additionally there are few places where you can find nightlife or dining choices outside of Main Street which often limits how busy Downtown can be at nightfall or during weekends when most people are away from work or school

Union City, Georgia was founded in 1802 by the merger of two small villages, Union and Enterprise. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Apalachicola River, and experienced a period of prosperity from the 1830s through the 1840s. However, during the Civil War Union City was unsuccessfully besieged by Confederate forces for several months in 1861-1862. In 1865 Union City was burned to the ground by Confederate troops retreating from Atlanta.
