Nampa, Idaho is a small town located in eastern Boise County, Idaho. The population was 4,665 at the 2010 census. Nampa is the county seat of Boise County and lies on the north bank of the Snake River. The first Europeans to visit Nampa were horseback riders led by Captain George Smith in 1827. He named the site "Nampa" after his native land, New Zealand. The first permanent settler in Nampa was J.M. Dutton in 1889. Dutton built a log cabin on what is now US-6 near present day downtown Nampa and named it Depot Hill since he had access to all of Railroad Street from his property downriver side. In 1902, Wm Atherton married Ida Sauer and settled here with their children Harry (Haley), Clifford (Claudia) and Lloyd Atherton Jr.. In 1916, during World War I, Nampa served as an airfield for various American military units including fighter planes being flown over Russia during the war effort which resulted in many destroyed or damaged aircraft including two P-40Es which crashed into a power plant across river from Depot Hill shortly after takeoff! Nampa's growth began slowly but steadily over time as more people came to live hereabouts seeking opportunities for farmland and business opportunities resulting in increased production of crops such as potatoes, corn and cotton along with other industries like plumbing stores, lumberyards and convenience stores becoming quite popular throughout this early 20th century period when rural America was transitioning from an agricultural society into a modern industrial one? On October 2nd 1922 while pumpkins were still being harvested from fields around town some men from 15 miles away upriver called Bybee prospected for gold near today's old Bybee Dam where they found an abandoned lot covered with dirt about 10 feet deep containing numerous pieces of gold nuggets that have been recovered by various miners throughout history starting with Spanish General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who struck it rich smuggling silver out of Mexico City back in 1765!! This significant event not only marked another watershed moment for Nampa but also initiated several years worth of heavy industry development that continues to this day utilizing both river transportation methods through barges moored along either side of the Snake River & trucking long distances across country using today’s aerial photo mapping technology!!! Today we enjoy quality educational institutions such as State University Of Idaho/Boise City Campus & Intermountain Medical Center just south of town while our historical center contains many well preserved pioneer buildings dating back to 1887 which makes it one stop stop on your touredagemnt around central Idaho!!!
