Twin Falls is a town in Sawtooth County, Idaho, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Falls–Idaho City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see the area now known as Twin Falls was Father Gabriel Nicolas de Champlain on July 4, 1608 when he and his party explored what is now western Oregon and saw the falls. He named it "Haida Gwaii" (Hawaii) because he thought the Indians were Native Americans. After French traders arrived here in 1792, they discovered gold and silver veins here and began to prospect for minerals. In 1859, a group of men from California led by John Crampton built a mill on the Boise River about north of present-day Twin Falls. They called their new settlement "Cramptonville." In 1867, businessman Brigham Young founded the Mormon Battalion which served under General Lyman Beecher in Utah during the Mexican-American War. After losing much of its equipment in Mexico City, the battalion turned back near this site on November 9th while camping out near today's twin peaks National Monument. Lieutenant William Clayton established an outpost here on October 14th 1868 while supplies were being transported overland from Council Bluffs via Fort Bridger to Salt Lake City through Montrose Pass. Clayton became head ranger at nearby Butte National Monument on February 15th 1870 after purchasing land east of Huckleberry Canyon from José Francisco Urquiza Gomez de Lara y Urquiza himself for $2 million dollars (). Today’s communities of Twin Falls and Idaho Springs sprang up around these two early settlements: Twinsburg (established 1865), Hillcrest (1872), Farmington (1874), North Pocatello (1876), Clearwater Springs (1878), Hayden Valley Resort/Aurora Hills Resort/Alpine Meadows Lodge (1902–2004). On November 20, 1879, the U.S. Geological Survey organized a party of scientists to explore Twin Falls River and its tributaries. The group included representatives from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Idaho Territorial government. The team made several surveys of the area before arriving at their destination on December 1. They found that the river was flowing slowly but steadily southward along its course through Twin Falls National Forest. The USGS team's observations led to a number of important discoveries about Twin Falls River and its tributaries. For example, they discovered that the water in Twin Falls Creek was very clear and free from obstructions such as rocks, trees, or logs; moreover, it had a strong current which caused it to flow quickly downstream. Furthermore, they found that there were numerous small villages situated near Twins Fall), many of which still exist today.
