Alton, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The founding date for Alton is unknown but it likely dates back to 1836 when a post office called Alton was established. The community received its name from General John Fenton and his men who were fighting in the Mexican–American War and their victory over Mexican forces near Alton helped bring about national attention. In 1881, a local mill owner, George Hinkle erected what is now known as Hinkle's Mill on the south side of Main Street. The mill worked until 1957 when it closed due to competition from more modern mills in nearby towns. Today, the old mill building still stands and is used as a museum by the Alton Historical Society which offers genealogical research services there. In addition to its role as a center of education and industry during early 19th century America, Alton also played an important role in World War II with both civilian and military contributions including supplying food for soldiers in Europe and providing materials for aircraft production plants throughout the Midwest. After years of decline following World War II, agricultural production began to rebound in Alton beginning in the late 1960s thanks to advances in irrigation technology which allowed farmers to grow large quantities of corn and other crops without having to go through traditional harvest methods such as picking fruit or harvesting vegetables. Today,Alton remains an important community with close ties to surrounding villages including Rockford (to its east), Naperville (to its north), and Chicago (to its west). Its economy relies heavily on agriculture but growth has been slow due primarily to lack of market demand for products exported from Alton such as cornmeal or flour which are produced outside of Illinois."

It was founded in 1836 by Abram Butterfield and his wife Sarah. The Butterfields were among the first white settlers in what became Kane County. In 1838, they founded the village of Alton on the east bank of the Sangamon River adjacent to what is now Geneva Township. They named their community after Althorp, an estate in Northumberland County, England. The first store in Alton opened in 1839 and served as a stopping point for stagecoaches traveling between Chicago and other points northward. By 1840, there were six stores in town; two of these were owned by Butterfield family members themselves and four others were operated by local merchants or farmers who supplied goods to residents of Alton through means such as wagon trade or bartering. The first school was organized at this time also; it taught students from one-room schoolhouses until about 1870 when brick schools with larger classrooms and more modern equipment began to be built across Kane County In 1851, Abram Butterfield bought much of the land adjoining his original village site from Solomon Grundy for $3 per acre (about $140 per km²). This purchase set off a series of disputes over control over which private individuals could build on that property - some claimed it had been gift from Grundy while others contended that butterfield had actually purchased it from Grundy's father-in-law for $2 per acre ($32 per km²). By 1865 most of unincorporated Kane County had become part Of Alton Village: five churches (St John's Episcopal Church being erected specifically for that purpose), three public square blocks bounded by Main Street on the southwest corner (the current site of State Capitol), Neely Avenue on the northeast corner (now Pritzker Road) and First Court eastward along Wabash Avenue until reaching Michigan Avenue westward where it terminated at Washington Boulevard near today's High School campus; all but three businesses within those boundaries still operate today: two grocery stores/cafeterias open since 1945 ("Everest Farms" & "Bella's"), one delicatessen/diner closed circa 1975 but reopened 1990 as "Prairie Dog", another restaurant now known simply as "Alton".
