Alton is a town in east central Illinois, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macon County. Alton is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Algonquin metropolitan area. The first settler in Alton was Gideon Wigham who came from Connecticut in 1795 and platted what would become Alton on May 13, 1800 by land grant to Samuel Applewhite. The community grew slowly until 1836, when it had a population of 350 people and became the seat of Macon County. In 1847, Colonel Enoch Pratt incorporated a town called "New Alton" into Macon County; this name disappeared after Pratt's death in 1870. In 1872, General John A. Logan led an army attacking Indian villages near Cairo and destroyed their crops so that they could not winter over there; this event is credited with spurring development in Alton, which continued even after Logan's death in 1881. In 1898, the Illinois legislature passed a bill providing for township organization within Macon County; as a result, Alton became one of sixteen townships formed within Macon County on February 1, 1899. On November 15th of that year (the same day as Cooktown), voters approved turning over governance of their municipal schools to the Township board effective January 1st following certification by the State Board Of Education (MOE). The Township system lasted until 1959 when all township-level governments were dissolved and replaced by Metro government through Reorganization Plan No 2 (RP2). As part of RP2,Macon County lost its county seat to Bloomingdale on December 5th 1963 due to population growth outside of Mcdonough County while Bloomingdale gained jurisdiction over both rural portions including parts of west suburban Cooktown while also annexing easternmost village located inside Cooktown borders – leading to Sherwood Heights becoming an annexed municipality separate from Alton Township proper with its own police station and streetlights! In 2015 through MOE action more than $27 million has been invested into local roads and bridges aging beyond replacement cost making them structurally deficient requiring rehabilitation or replacement costing taxpayers more than just about any other type infrastructure project I’ve ever seen!

These events have helped make Alton one of the largest African American communities in North America and have made it an ever-growing cultural and economic center for this region.
Alton was founded in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The town was named for Isaiah Alton, an early settler and member of the LDS church. After years of growth, Alton became a city in 1894. It grew rapidly during World War I, when it became home to the Alton Army Ammunition Plant. In 1925, Alton merged with neighboring Rockford to form one large city.
