The community was platted in 1853 by James Barrington and his brother-in-law George Hull. The first post office was established in 1854. The community name derives from the stream that flows through it, Barrington Creek. In 1881, John Fenton erected a frame windmill on the creek which still stands today. Barrington is located at (41°01′00″N 88°47′00″W). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of 2000, there were 384 people living in Barrington Township including 134 households out of a total population of 692 residents. The township contains no schools; all students attend Vermilion Central High School in neighboring Clinton Township. As of 2000, there were 309 businesses operating in Barrington with an aggregate daily sales volume of $27 million making it one of the most active business communities in southern Illinois
