Batavia is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Batavia is one of nine towns in the Cook County community of Schaumburg. The first European to explore and settle what would become Batavia was Michael Crain in 1814. After some time he named it after his friend and explorer David Thompson, who had explored much of Canada and North America during that same year. At first only a small hamlet, Crain's Village grew rapidly into an incorporated town by 1820 when land grants were given out for the establishment of schools and other public needs. A rail station called Batavia was built on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1852 which made it easy for goods to be transported from rural Illinois to easternChicago or vice versa. As more people moved into Batavia, businesses opened up including a brewery, bakery, grocery store and post office as well as several residences dating back to before incorporation. In 1865–1866 construction started on what would become known as "the White City" – an area now consisting of several blocks north-central Batavia along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard between State Street and Randolph Road with new streets being built parallel to Grant Boulevard (now Randolph Road) providing access from both sides of the street while also serving as a shopping district for residents west of State Street while east side streets served as business corridors bisectingBatavia Township (later Cook County). The growth continued until 1903 when plans were made to move all occupants of large buildings downtown so that they could be used for agricultural purposes instead; however this idea was later abandoned due to costs associated with maintaining such large structures downtown when many homes were demolished during World War II for use as civic centers or military barracks. By 1907 there were over 300 businesses operating in Batavia with 3 churches and 2 universities - making it one of the most populous communities eastof Chicago limits at that time! The last major development occurred during World War II when vast amounts of housing were built within walking distance of downtown for soldiers barracks located just southwestof present day Randolph Rd., eastof present day State St., north-eastof present day US Highway 622 (now I-79), northwestoff DDOT highway 63 (now Kedzie Ave.), southwest off I-680/I-94 (now Ravenswood Rd.)and southeast off I-290/I-355 near current day Cicero Avenue makingBatavia oneranuals largest city center outside Chicago! Batavia was founded in 1829 by George Stephenson and his wife, Ann. It was named for the Dutch town of Batavia, which he had visited as a boy. The Stonemasons built the first courthouse in Batavia in 1834. In 1839, Stephenson married Maria Anna Clark. They moved to Batavia and started a grocery store. The Clarks ran the store until their death in 1903. Their son, George Stephenson Jr., continued the family's grocery chain until it merged with Archer Daniels Midland in 1985. The area that is now Batavia was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. The first European to visit what is now Batavia was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who charted the course of the Illinois River in 1535. He thought he saw Indian villages on the riverbank and called them "Batavianna." In 1673, French traders arrived at batavia and established trade relations with the local natives. By 1795, however, most of the native people had been killed or driven out by white settlers who had come to claim land near present-day Batavia as part of Joseph Gibson's Purchase from Spain in 1796. In 1829, George Stephenson and Ann Stonemason founded what is today known as Batavia Township on land they had bought from Joseph Gibson Sr.'s heirs after purchasing some 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present-day Batavia from him three years earlier. At that time, all of central Illinois were still territory belonging to France under an agreement made during the Napoleonic Wars between Russia and Austria when Napoleon invaded Europe in 1800 seeking revenge for his failures against her allies at Marengo and Hohenlinden). France ceded most of her North America holdings including Illinois to Great Britain following its victory over Napoleon at Waterloo; henceforth only Ontario remained under French control except for a tiny strip around Chicago which became Ulysses S Grant's pretext for invading that city two years later during Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation). At about this same time (1829), Stephenson also developed a water power scheme utilizing surface irrigation using wells drilled into hillsides west of present-day downtownBatavia while simultaneously building a nearby road system necessary for commercial shipping traffic through those hillsides on Lake Michigan This road system would become one of America's great commercial arteries - referred to as "the Erie Canal" - when it opened up southern Indiana Territory (now Indiana) to settlement by emigrants coming down Michigan Avenue from Buffalo – via way then barely traveled – just south of Grand Rapids Airport today! The development/construction/operation of these early transportation systems helped spur population growth throughout central Illinois during what can be characterized as both its earliest days (. . .) but also its heyday (. . .) beginning about 1830 thru 1840 especially given how isolated much inland rural areas were then relative to midwestern Main Street Streets – even more so since infrastructure such as roads were often not yet available due largely to lack thereof due eitherto either financial constraints or political obstructionism emanating from eastward facing settlements !! These days you can drive anywhere within central IL & many other Midwestern US states without ever leaving main street (& I'm talking about full stop here) ie pretty much everything outside cities limits has been brought old school internet speed aka cable/phone/internet etc.)
