Belleville, Illinois is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,351 at the 2010 census. Belleville is the most populous city in DuPage County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois. The city has been called "The City of Progress" since it became a municipality in 1871. The town of Belleville was first settled by Europeans in 1794. It was renamed Belleville on December 6, 1871, after General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War victory at Battle of Bull Run Bridge near present-day Belleville. At its peak as an agricultural community with over 150 businesses and 7500 residents, Belleville had a manufacturing sector that included munitions manufacturers such as Colt and Remington Arms Company; papermakers including J&B Paper Products; dye merchants like Westinghouse Electric Corporation and ICC (a predecessor to Synergy Chemical Industries); boots manufacturer Jocko's Boot & Shoe Co.; cigars; and lumber yards such as Duplett & Carpenter Lumber Company and Wabash Lumber Company. These activities were interrupted by World War I due to military production priorities but resumed following the Armistice which ended the war on November 11, 1918. After years of growth followed by modest budget cuts during World War II (due to America's entry into World War II), Belleville experienced rapid expansion during the postwar period due to immigration from Europe – especially from Czechoslovakia – as well as increasing demand for jobs withinDu Page County resulting from new industry development withinDu Page County itself including Plastics Manufacturing Association Inc., Beloit Corporation (now Allstate Insurance Companies) and others. This growth led to increased traffic congestion on South Church Street which led to passage of a $2 million bond issue that authorized construction of a bypass road around downtown Belleville known as "Southgate Boulevard". The bypass opened for traffic on October 1, 1951

After years of decline due to low birthrates and high crime rates, Belleville experienced significant growth following passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 and subsequent investment by private enterprise in health care facilities and businesses throughout townspeople Band together to keep those investments going The original plat for what would become Belleville was filed on October 5th 1838 by John Pemberton who named his new township Bellevilles after himself – “Beleaguered Village” he said at that time This plat shows evidence that early settlers were not content simply living near their homes but also exploring all around them looking for new land to purchase or build upon The first houses were built within 2 ½ years of each other on November 3rd 1838 just east of today’s intersection of Kedzie Avenue & State Street In 1840 there were only 10 residents living in this small town according to census takers but within 5 years they had increased to 30+ including 8 men! By 1850 there were 50+ citizens living here with 4 churches/synagogues along with schools and businesses One reason why so much progress was made so quickly may have been because transportation wasn't available back then like it is now – wagon trains brought goods upcountry where farmers grew crops

Belleville, Illinois was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and David Belleville. The Bellevilles were farmers who moved from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania to central Illinois. They began farming on a tract of land that had been given to them by James Krieger. In 1830, the Kriegers sold their farmstead to Abraham Lincoln for $100. Abraham Lincoln had come to central Illinois as a delegate from Indiana and bought the farmstead because he wanted to find a place where he could raise crops and build an argument against slavery while visiting the area. The Bellevilles also donated land adjacent to their farmstead for school purposes. In 1837, they built a house on their new property and named it after themselves – Belleville Township. The first post office in Belleville was established in 1840. By 1850, there were 24 businesses in Belleville with a total population of 592 people. In 1861, Belleville became one of 12 townships in DuPage County when it was organized into that county. From 1865 until its annexation by Chicago in 1897, Belleville experienced rapid growth due to manufacturing interests within the city limits which led to increased trade and commerce between townspeople and those outside of town. During this time period, many grandiose plans were made for developing the township including building a dam which would have created Lake Michigan through flooding; however these plans never came true because of financial difficulties faced by the township during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871-1872 which destroyed most commercial buildings within town limits as well as killed more than 100 people including many high ranking politicians and business owners who favoured industrialization over agricultural development
