Belleville is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 44,452 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. Belleville was founded on April 12, 1847 by hard working farmers from Canada and England. The first settlers were a group of men led by John Aiken who came to what is now Belleville from nearby Kaskaskia County. In 1850 the town had just 8 residents and grew rapidly due to its location near the new Chicago & Western Railroad which connected Chicago with other parts of America. The early guns used in Belleville were muzzleloaders which were common for hunting small game such as mammals and squirrels using bows and arrows or dogs as tracking hounds. By 1851 pistols had become common and soon after rifles were also available for purchase. From 1859 until 1865 rifle manufacturers made rifles for use in the Civil War including Samuel Colt who produced his famous " revolving revolver". After the war many blacksmiths started making firearms in Belleville which helped contribute to its growth as a gun manufacturing center during this time period. Although not all guns manufactured here turned out well, it did help contribute to Belleville's reputation today as an industry leader when it comes to quality firearms manufacture

In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place on both mainstreet and surrounding neighborhoods including: 1) A new shopping mall called "The Crossing" which opened in 2006 adjacent to Main Street just south of Interstate 5; 2) A $60 million mixed-use project called "City Creek" completed in 2011 adjacent to Park Drive; 3) A $30 million courthouse renovation project announced in December 2012 that will include a new jail (the old courthouse building will be used as office space); 4) New homes being developed along State Route 123 just north of downtown;

The Belleville Arsenal was built in 1799 by John Sommers and others as part of an effort to militarize the area around Chicago. The arsenal produced cannons and rifles for use against Native Americans who occupied what is nowDuPage County during the early 1800s. The site served as a munitions dump until it closed in 1909. The city's first mayor was John Jernigan and its first female Mayor Jane Addams who also founded Addams Home for Loveless children which still operates today as a home-based daycare center affectionately known as "The Ladybirds." In 1907, Belleville changed its name to honor General James Kappes who had fought with distinction during the Mexican–American War and later became governor of Illinois. Belleville has been called "the most picturesque small town on the continent" according to writer Alice Paul Johnston because of its rolling hills and winding streets that lead from one cottage or farm house to another through centuries-old agricultural land that has seen little change since then. According to author Diane Ackerman, Belleville is "a true community" where people are more interested in their own individual pursuits than taking care of other people's needs; this type of democracy can be found only within small towns like Belleville which remain largely unchanged over time despite large increases or departures in their populations over time (Ackerman). Belleville started out life as an agricultural village that grew corn, beans, wheat and other crops while also manufacturing items such as saddles and horseshoes from local leather products available at local mills along with selling eggs from hens kept at nearby farms. A few miles away lived what is now known as White Settlement – a group made up mainly of African Americans working various trades specificially related to farming before becoming involved politically with James Kappes’s new organization “The People” (Goudreau 2). From here many blacksmiths came into existence providing needed tools for farmers while also starting their own businesses such as bakeries carpenters etcetera.; eventually this neighborhood formed the nucleus around which developed downtown Belleville today! 1) Within minutes walkable distance everything any person might need including hospitals/clothing/ Grocery stores etc...2) Largely untouched since original settlement - still maintain these characteristics today
