The post office was established in 1834, and remained open until 1966 when it changed its name to Belvidere. Belvidere is known for its cheese production which began in 1903 when John Fournier started making Gouda cheese here. Today, Fournier's heirs continue to produce high-quality cheese products here as well as other goods such as milk and eggs. Other businesses that have situated themselves here include an auto dealership and grocery store which opened in 1984, and a restaurant which opened in 2012 called Lafayette Grill & Brewery which serves up local cuisine along with microbrews from Illinois breweries such as Moon River Brewery and Goose Island Brewery

In 1814, Captain George Armstrong founded what would become Armstrong-Allison Harvey Manufacturing Company here and began manufacturing cannonballs and other munitions for the U.S. army. By 1870, the company had become one of the leading firearms manufacturers in North America. In 1871, Colonel John Denton opened up what would become Denton's Cotton Mill which manufactured cotton fabrics and clothing for Americans across Europe and Asia. In 1907, David Sanger purchased Armstrong-Allison Harvey Manufacturing Company from Colonel John Denton and renamed it Sanger-Allison Harvey Incorporated with headquarters in Belvidere. The town built its first schoolhouse in 1892 and its first hospital in 1915 after being scoured for land to build a hospital by the state health department because of affliction rates among rural residents due to poor sanitation facilities at that time. The first general store opened its doors here on October 13th, 1916., further developing this important sector of local economy during early American days when goods were transported long distances by wagon or horseback then delivered by stagecoach or train to consumers’ homes scattered throughout Illinois In 1977 Belvidere voters passed an ordinance increasing their taxes to fund vital government services such as fire protection; libraries; sewers; streetlights; ambulance service; etc.– making this community one of the most vibrant civic institutions within its boundaries today .
