Belvidere is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,814 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Kane County. Belvidere was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a city in 1892. The current mayor is Melvin Ratcliffe. Belvidere's history can be traced back to 1836 when two men named Isaac Gray and Solomon Evans settled on a farm near what is now downtown Belvidere. They were among the first white people to live in that area of Kane County and soon became involved in local commerce and politics. In 1857, they married Sarah Morehouse, daughter of General John Morehouse, who had moved from Tennessee to become president of the Illinois Central Railroad Company. The couple would eventually have six children: Sarah (1858-1947), Edwin (1860-1948), Unity (1862-1945), Franklin D.(1864-1949), Anna Jane (1866-1963) and Bela (1868-1968). In 1862, Abraham Lincoln won his first election as President of the United States and took office with a mandate to pursue Reconstruction following the American Civil War. As part of this effort, he ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman's Union army to march into southern Illinois to destroy any Confederate forces that remained intact. This aggressive move led to violence betweenUnion troops and civilians throughout much of central Illinois; one such incident took place in Belvidere where three men were killed after shots were fired by soldiers while they gathered around their homes for dinner! It was during this time that Isaac Gray met his future wife Sarah Morehouseagain – they would marry on October 6th, 1867 just three months before her father died suddenly at age 71 years old! With war raging all around them and their young family barely scraping by financially, it’s no wonder that Mr & Mrs Gray worked diligently day & night throughout Reconstruction trying to make ends meet for their brood – all while keeping their home Fireswept with memories of their dad’s smiling face :-) SarahMorehouses five children would grow up attending public schools within walking distance of their home which meant there wasn’t much need for entertainment other than watching football or playing tag out front :-) Eventually due largely to postbellum economic hardships brought about by railroad construction across America – including an influx of African Americans working on tracks – most residents abandoned downtown Belvidere by 1900 according to one source although others maintain that many simply migrated away because they found nothing hereabouts appealing enough!! In 1902 Mayor Burt Rasmussen announced plans for development along State Street eastward from Market Street; this included erection of a new City Hall which was completed in 1907 followed by annexation into the larger city Limits later that year !! In 1911 Mayor Norris Whipple announced plans for yet another development on state land east side from State streets including erection of an even bigger City Hall !! Which led finallyto incorporation as an unincorporated community - official date unknown but possibly sometime before 1912??? By 1938 there still continued some retail businesses located closeby however most residents had left for various reasons including World War II shortages/depression or simply moving elsewhere during those tumultuous times!! A few notable locals remaining include Mrs Norris Whipple herself who lived until she passed away ripely ripe old age right alongside her husband!!! And last but certainly not least - 2 major employers during those times both within easy walking distance: Pabst Brewing Co./Chrysler Jeep Dealer etc... Additionally significant contributions made locally include establishment/promotion/advancement OF early rock ‘n roll music (& blues) culture through bands likeThe Tornados(manager/founder Eddie Cochran)+John Berryman(writer/pianist)+Bob Dylan(artistsinger))who all resided within easy driving distance either at home or taking occasional gigs at Pabst Brewery.......Today Belvidere continues strong thanks largely TO its rich agricultural history dating back centuries starting with early pioneer farmers being able to provide fresh produce directlyTo support these longstanding interestsaday businesses continue operations ranging from homesteading tours available freeofcharge (& providing interesting insight into daily life back then)to hosting annual agriculture shows opento the public+ Numerous art exhibits+ numerous historical artifacts on view each year.........
