Belvidere, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first knives were made by Native Americans in this area and were used to skin game. The first European settlers arrived in this area in 1812 and found that there was a demand for goods brought overland from Europe. One of the early pioneers in Belvidere was John Richardson who came to the area in 1825 and started a tannery. In 1830, George Stephenson built a tunnel through which water ran from the Sauk River into Lake Michigan, providing transportation for goods and people across the lake. This new transportation amenity led to increased business for George Richardson's tannery and he also began manufacturing knives which he sold through his store on State Street. In 1834, Nicholas Wilkinson opened Wilkinson’s grocery store on State Street which became one of the earliest grocery stores west of the Great Lakes region. He continued to operate this store until his death in 1938. In 1835-36 Amos Cutts opened a mercantile establishment on Main Street which served as an important link between local farmers and traders along Pennsylvania Avenue north of downtown Chicago (now Wacker Drive). Cutts also manufactured weapons including swords and daggers at his shop while also selling other items such as agricultural supplies, shoes, clothing, hardware and cigars (see below). He died suddenly less than two years after opening his store when he was mauled by three bears near his farmstead on November 25th,.1836 Aided by young Samuel Morse who knew about bear hunting then living just east of town on Mound Hill Road Amos Cutt left behind one of Chicagoland's most famous knife brands

In 1907, a fire destroyed much of the downtown business district, but did not damage theaggingest part of town-the Belvidere High School.
