The name of the town comes from Benjamin Bensen, who bought land in what is now Bensenville in 1836. The first settlers in what is now Bensenville were farmers and their families. Over time, there were three main businesses that operated in the town: a grocery store, tavern and post office. In 1916, an electric streetlight was installed in the center of town and it has been running ever since. It was once said that if you could find one light switch to control all of Bensenville's lights it would be worth your time to explore this small town! In recent years, there has been a lot of development going on in and around Bensenville. There are new restaurants coming into the fold as well as apartments and homes being built for people who want to live close to work or school while still having some privacy. Bensenville began as a post office on March 3, 1853, and became a city on December 1, 1907. The name of the town comes from George Bensen, an early settler. The history of Bensenville goes back to 1853 when George Bensen settled in what is now known as Bensenville Township. He had come to this area during the time of the American Civil War because he believed that it would be safe for settlers to live in what was then still a war-torn region. In 1865, however, General Grant ordered all settlements within reach of Springfield be burned and all inhabitants destroyed without any warning or choice by those living there. George’s family were among those who lived through that experience and his son John took up residence in what is now known as North Park Avenue between State Street and Washington Boulevard on May 6th of that year. That park remains today as one of downtown's most popular attractions with its beautiful views over Cook County Courthouse (now Willis Tower) and Lake Michigan George’s descendants continued to live in the township until about 1930 when they sold their holdings to join what is now Hoffman Estates in Cook County east of Chicago In 1909 – just two years after becoming a city – Bensenville entered into an agreement with Sweden’s largest railroad company Elbe Line Railway Co., which agreed to build a railway line from Warsaw (then Lwów) through rural areas near Königsberg (now Gdańsk) via Szczecin and Wrocław - connecting both cities by way of stations at Racibórz (Now Opole), Nowy Sącz (Nowa Targa), Olecko (Olesno), Bydgoszcz (Bydgoszcz), Cieszyn(Cieszyn). When completed this line would have connected Europe with America – making it one of the first ever railways linking both continents together! Elbe Line Railway Co.'s president Ulysses S. Grant personally contributed $10,000 towards construction costs which were meted out over 10 years The completion date for this important project wasMay 15th 1911 but due to World War I interrupting freight traffic along much of Elbe Line Railway Co.'s route it never stopped running fully operational until 1943 . However even though it only ran for 50 years it left an indelible mark uponBensonville; many streets such as Racibórz - once renamed 'Warsaw Road' following its connection with Elbe Line Railway Company - remain today named after former Elbe Line Railway employees including Racibórz Station Rd & US 31E . The tracks & switchbacks leading off RacibórZ Station Rd continue right next door where new housing has been built since before World War II

The decline of Bensenville began during World War I, when agricultural production shifted from agriculture to munitions manufacturing. This shift caused jobs for local farmers to go away, and as industry increased in nearby cities such as Chicago, Bensenville slowly lost its way. By the 1930s, it had completely disappeared from existence - only its name remaining among those who remember it fondly from long ago.

It is the largest city in Kane County by population and the second-largest city in Chicago. Bensenville's name is derived from John Bensen (1811–1897), a settler who arrived in 1837 and developed land near what is now the intersection of State Street and First Avenue. The first post office in Bensenville was established on Valentine's Day, 1844, as "Behanville". A courthouse was built on State Street between First Avenue and Van Dyke Road (now Wabash Avenue) in 1851. The Post Office Department moved to its present location on State Street between First Avenue and Van Dyke Road in 1902. In 1865, two brothers named Augustus Ewing started a cotton gin complex west of town on the north side of First Avenue just east of Griggs Road. In 1875 they sold their business to Wm. Felsheimer for $2 million dollars which made him one of the richest men in Chicago at that time. At this time Behanville had only one store - an old general store - that could hold about 50 people at a time until it became an annex to Felsheimer's company plant on West Side Highway near Cicero Avenue that opened in 1912 . The original Behanville post office closed down circa 1951 when telephone service replaced mail delivery for most residents .
