Bloomingdale is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,965 at the 2010 census. Bloomingdale is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and is bordered by Normal to the north and Westchester to the east. It lies on a rural plain about 25 miles long by 12 miles wide with rolling hills and several small lakes. The first settler in Bloomingdale was James Krieger who arrived in 1836 from Maryland. He built a cabin on the present site of Bloomingdale Village on the bluffs overlooking Joliette Creek. Krieger's cabin still stands today and is a museum open to the public. In 1846, John Prentice moved his family from New York City to Bloomingdale and began farming land he had purchased from Levi Morton near Joliette Creek. In 1865, John Fenton also moved to Bloomingdale, joining Prentice as a farmer. By 1870, all three men had formed their own families and were engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1892, Italian-American Caterina Lazzarini opened her first grocery store in Bloomingdale Village while working for her brother-in-law Jacob Riis on State Street across from what is now Verizon Wireless Headquarters building (now Home Depot). Lazzarini later sold her store to J C Reardon & Sons which operated it until 1978 when it was taken over by M&M's Incorporated as part of its acquisition of Canada Dry Enterprises Limited (CARE). CARE then merged with Coca Cola Company USA operations (the two companies having both been founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt) forming one large company - Coca Cola Co., Ltd., headquartered at 3200 Wilson Boulevard in Chicago - before being renamed PepsiCo plc.) Bloomingdale is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon and his family as Bluffton Village. In 1857, Bloomingdale became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. Bloomingdale's first school was built in 1857 and it served students from kindergarten through 12th grade until the beginning of the 20th century when public schools were opened throughout Cook County. In 1865, Bloomingdale became one of twelve towns in Cook County to be annexed by Chicago; before this annexation process could begin, Bloomingdale had its own mayor and city council. The village merged with its neighboring town of Humboldt Park on February 14, 1984 to form the combined municipality of Bloomingdale–Humboldt Park. As a result of this merger, Blossom Township (a separate township that had been established in 1946) within Humboldt Park lost its right to vote on municipal issues and ceased to exist as an entity within the new municipality; Blossom Township residents continue to identify as residents of Bloomingdale–Humboldt Park municipally however. In November 2004, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he would not seek re-election after more than twenty years on office and appointed his brother Alex Emanuel as Mayor Pro Tempore effective Immediately following Rahm's retirement effective December 1st 2004 which ended any remaining mayoral term limits for City Council members that may have still applied post-2004 election results - also known as "Rahm 2" rule theory or "Emanuel 2". On January 11th 2009 Mayor Emanuel announced he would not seek re-election after less then two months on office due to health concerns; his brother Alex Emanuel was electedMayor Pro Tempore effective immediately following Mayor Emanuel's announcement becoming first African AmericanMayor of Chicago since Richard Mosely did so in 1978 under Sam Cooke administration).
